It's really not all that bad to do, even on jackstands. I've done mine twice like this. Prepped it alone and my son helped me drop it the next day.

What's it like if your tank is full, and your fuel pump goes then?


if the pump stopped working, at least try having someone crank it while you hit the tank with a rubber mallet as hard as you feel. completely. a lot of times till will start pumping again. Just down shut it off till you have it where it's going to be parked for the repair. it doesn't always work more than once haha.

Update: Going to do an about face. A work buddy referred me to a highly recommended, family-owned shop w/50 years in business. They'll charge me 3 hours for a total of $390 to drop the tank and change the fuel pump. They're fine with me providing the parts. In light of that, went ahead and ordered the AC/Delco pump w/sender, a new Lock ring, and Charcoal vapor canister from Rock Auto. Scheduled to have it done on July 9th, will advise how it goes.
Much more down to earth than the $1,593 estimate I had received at Firestone and worth it to me in terms of not having to spend a Saturday pulling the seat, fabbing the access plate and changing the pump.
July 9th, 2024 Update: Just picked up the Tahoe from the shop. The new Fuel Pump, Vapor Canister and lock ring installed by the shop for $380. Currently 113 here in metro-PHX... so glad I didn't try doing this myself. Just filled her back up and all is good. :)

July 12th, 2024 Update: 600+ miles to & from Carlsbad and the Tahoe ran flawlessly! She pulled eagerly up the mountains West of El Centro with change in elevation from sea level to 4,180 feet max at the Tecate Pass and back down to sea level on the Pacific Coast. Did so with the A/C on and with little to no movement of the temp gauge from the 210 mark. Pretty remarkable as it was 108° as we commenced the climb, finally escaping to 72° on the Pacific Coast. Got home yesterday at lunchtime and after cool-down checked the oil. Very pleased that at 128K miles she used no oil and that the oil I had just changed prior to the trip was still a nice, clean honey-color (Mobil-1 full synthetic). Had a great time in the cooler weather, but back at the office today in Tempe, AZ and another 108° day :)

It's just me, but if I find a shop I can trust, like I did when I was in self storage and could not work on my stuff all the time, I spread the word and tip them. Especially if they let me supply parts. Thankfully, the guy I found now has his own shop and I work there sometimes.

I finally got up the gumption to do the pre-emptive access panel. I'd like to give a big shout out to @89Suburban for his excellent pictures in this thread.

I head out for a 10 day trip to Idaho Friday with 2 ATVs in tow, so I figured why not thwart one of Murphys possible plans. I have a new pump, but the truck is running fine. It's just a what-if solution. I wanted to remove the rear seats to make a platform for sleeping during our team driving (it should hopefully be like time travel! Just like when we were kids!), so it made sense to dive into this project.

Anyways, maybe I'll never have to use it, but at least it's now how GM should've built it in the first place IMO. Luckily the carpet hides my mediocre sheet metal skills.......

If/when you ever sell this truck, without having changed the fuel pump (because it will never go out while you own it now that you have easy access) the pump will take a crap and the new owner will either find this and think someone must have changed it before OR will drop the tank to change it and then kick himself when he sees the access panel from below.... lol

Structurally, I personally wouldn't worry about it. I've had a couple cars over the past 45 years that came OEM with an access panel, such as an 82 Nissan where it was under the back seat. Three screws and a gasket. There's also a kit available for Jeep CJ's with a door that matches the corrugated floor.

But would I do it myself? Not at all. I can drop the tank faster than it would take to fabricate an access panel. If someone is that worried about it on a long trip, nothing wrong with installing a Carter 58 PSI external electric pump in line with a hidden switch. When not turned on the fuel flows freely through it. (I have the low pressure version mounted in line on my Jeep CJ that rarely gets used. Not only for a fuel pump backup system, but to prime the system if it hasn't ran in a couple weeks. And peace of mind if I'm 75 mi from the nearest cell phone signal)
