So I am looking at the GM GENUINE 12598832 VLOM. have read bad reviews on the oem unit having very poor casting quality which reminds me of the valve covers when I bought them OEM as well. What are you guys using as per the VLOM goes?

What's poor about the casting quality? The piece is warped? The mating surfaces not flat/true? Or are they complaining about the casting flash that look like "cracks"?

That #12598832 is NOT a VLOM. It's a valley cover, but has the built-in seals for the decommissioned AFM towers in the block. It's what I used for my delete. No complaints.

Mine is an 08 and it has a flat cover. The Orings that seal off the DOD oil feeds will shrink over time and cause major oil pressure issues. When I had mine apart I drilled and taped them.

Hello all
Its been a few months but I finally got around to do this job. So I replaced the valley cover with a smooth one. Everything went well. Started the car up and it ran fine for about 30 secounds then it started slapping ******* the passenger side. Shut engine off and gave it a few minutes. Started her up again and ran fine for 30 secounds and now its slapping on the driver side and not the passenger side. tried starting her several times and it runs fine for a few secounds and then it starts slapping on the driver side. What am I looking for here?

I don't understand what you mean by slapping. Do you mean a knocking or rapping sound?

I just dont understand. Everything went smooth. from the removel of the valley cover to the install of the new one.
Why does it start knocking after 20-30 secounds and only the driver side?

I don't either. It makes me wonder if there is more to disabling it on that particular engine. Like maybe the ECU is still looking for the VLOM to be there even though it's deactivated. I have a later build '07 with the L92 and it has a flat valley pan with the pigtail wrapped up like it was never used. But your early pictures clearly show the pigtail hooked to the VLOM.

In the process of installing the oem vlom and see what happens.

My cylinder head went kaboom.

Put everything back together. After the original vlom went back on and everything was tripled check. Went to start it and the passenger side head started knocking but the driver side stopped knocking. A minute later a big knock and everything settled with a horrible miss. Engine light on and stability service light on. Misfire cylinder 6. Swapped injectors, swapped coils and nothing.

Any recommandations?

compression check?

do these afm but not enabled engines use the afm lifters? if so, a lifter might have gotta stuck. if you can't do a compression check, at least pull the valve cover off that side and have someone crank it while you watch the rockers move.

so I was thinking, if these do have afm lifters installed, it might not be a good idea to block off those oil passageways under the vlom. I've read that afm lifters need to vent oil from there or pressure will build up and releasing the pins deactivating the lifters in the same way the solenoids opening does. just not controlled

Shit. I suspect you're gonna have to pull those heads and get those lifters out of there. Inspect the cam, and go back in with new non-AFM lifters, OEM trays and any other parts. Can do it in a long Saturday if everything goes smoothly. That seriously sucks, man.

Any luck with what’s going on yet? Stupid question but, did you triple check your ht leads for the wrong orientation? Someone I know with the same name as me did that and scared the ship out of them until it was caught.

Removed the valve cover today. For some reason cant post the video but i have a stuck/collapsed dod lifter on cylinder 6.

Can i just do this

TYF can't host videos. Facebook works for some members, but others don't use it (personal choice). Post it to YouTube or other host and add the link to your post here.

if it were mine, I'd unsick the lifter, vent those ports and try again. if you have afm lifters you need to vent that oil pressure, if you have standard lifters you block those off not to bleed off oil pressure for no reason. being as you afm lifters have never been used, once they released and collapsed it got stuck. that's my best guess. there's a youtube guy that dives deep into all this afm stuff, taking lifters apart and things.

I don't have first hand knowledge of them, but that was my take away from his explanation

edit. I'm pretty convinced this guys has sorted out the work around for these trucks. jump to 17mins and he gets to the release and then how to vent the oil so it doesn't happen again.
