What's the maestro stuff? Replace the 9 million pac dongles you used to need to keep factory stuff?

Yes, SWC, Onstar, amp or not, etc. plus it hooks into the OBDII port (actually you hardwire it into 2 wires from the back of the connector) so the HU can display tons of info (which a full-screen HU might but IDK because mine just had an AM/FM/CD). Through the maestro, it can display screens like full engine gauges, vehicle info screen with TPMS, climate control, parking assist, etc. Things that are controllable can be done through the HU. The Pioneer has a data connector on the back just for the Maestro. All in one box that's about the size of a PAC SWC. Plus it's programmable so if you want to do things like bypass your factory amp, delete OnStar or not use parking assist you can do that. You hook it to your computer and go to their website, then it sees what unit you have and asks for your vehicle info and what HU you have and walks you through your options. It's pretty damn nice.

Thanks for guinea piggin it. Cutting off RCA ends just isn't a normal thing so I'd be leery if I didn't already know it was the way to do it.

Car audio and accessory wiring, yes. Commercial and residential wiring gets old fast. Wiring up a breaker panel is kinda relaxing, though.

I agree on trimming. I'd use a drill bit in a rotary tool or, if there's enough clearance behind it, a body saw. An oscillating multi tool would be great if it fits in there. I bought one from Hazard Fraught about 6 years ago and am always finding uses for it. They're a great must-have tool to have for the price.
Actually the pocket back there is a perfect fit to slide the Maestro in and then tuck the wiring harness in. After doing it the second or third time I realized it was perfect if I did it right. On another note, I ended up using one of my old installer tricks to get the wiring down on the driver side- a speedo cable. Anybody ever use one of these for fishing wires down?

Today was pretty productive. I started by replacing the rear bumper step pads with the aftermarket ones I bought. I was a bit worried they wouldn't fit right since all 3 pieces were the same price as one piece of the OEM stuff but they fit perfect. It was a bit hard but I marked on top where the clips were underneath so I knew where to push down. I think it looks good with the black parts. I dressed them up with Silk Shine and they really shine. Nothing like new parts. Plus it's awesome that the tailgate works and actually lays all the way down.

While I was working, my stubby antenna showed up but of course the threads were wrong so I drilled and tapped it to fit. Then I decided to install the backup cam and found a hole through the passenger floorboard that the builders had used, so the cable went through there. Then I just aired it up and climbed under and used some zip-tied it all the way back. I wired power and ground off the backup light. Then it just came down to mounting the camera. I cut the back off the spare tire hoist access and shoved the cam in, then did my best to center a small hole in the center of the lens, through the cover. Once I got the small hole in the right place, I drilled it out to 5/8" and used some wood shims to temp the cam in. Then instead of using the stupid ring thing to hold the assembly in, I screwed it to the truck. The screws can't be seen when the cover is closed. Then I leveled the truck and adjusted the cam until it was perfect, and then filled the areas around the cam with black silicone and left the shims in place until that cures, then I'll pull the cam and finish siliconing the back. It came out nice; pretty stealthy and it works perfect.

Also my Tech II showed up today. Looks like I'll be able to troubleshoot my airbag and abs problems. There goes that crazy turn-my-pic-sideways crap again. I'll leave that one.

I just remembered my new air filter arrived yesterday so I installed it. I wasn't sure if it would fit so I attempted it with the plastic still on in case I needed to return it and it looked like it might so....I made it work. I kind of had to bend part of it but it's fine. And it's red so there's like 5 HP right there. I still haven't dropped the coin to add my VIN to my Autocal so Blackbear can tune it but I will when my tax return shows up.

Back to the Maestro- can you bypass the factory amp but keep the chimes functional? Basically divert just the low-level audio signals originally going to the amp to some RCAs to plug to a regular amp?

Yes; it actually comes with it's own chimes speaker that you mount up in the dash, and you can control the volume on it too. No more chime through the door speaker.

It's actually a Vertronix, a Bosch subsidiary. The user manual is from Bosch. The thing is a beast; much bigger than I thought it would be. The main Tech 2 is as big as a pair of shoes. Plus there's the CANDI module. I just hooked it up and read all the DTC's in the truck. The ABS problems looked to be history and the current tests had all passed so I cleared them and the ABS light is off now. I'll see if it comes back. The service stabilitrac and service traction control messages are still there but I don't remember if I looked at those issues. I did see problems with the SIR system and current failed tests so I didn't clear those DTC's. And ever since I pulled half my fuses the other day, my TPMS message isn't there which is good since I read that that system can't be disabled by a tune although there are other ways to fake it out including a spoofing box. Anyway, I have half my messages gone and I have some info on my airbags that I can research. The thing is super easy to use; it walks you through the menus, you just need your RPO code list handy.

Oh well I have ZERO patience dammit. I added the truck to my Autocal so it looks like a tune will happen next week if Blackbear has time. Kind of curious to see what improvement I'll see in the 4.8. It will be nice to get some better shifting and correct the speedo; it's off 5 mph in the city and 8+ on the highway.
