General Grabber X3

Has anyone run these yet? I have always liked the look of red letter grabbers, but they just don't perform here in Chicago (winters, mainly). Have been fairly decided on KO2, until I revisited the idea of these X3's while poking around again....

So, KO2 vs. X3..... Thoughts?

I can't comment on the General Grabbers but when it was time for me to put new tires on, I was all set to go with KO2s. Then I saw the Falken Wildpeak AT3W. They carry the snowflake/mountain "extreme weather" rating and seem to be very beefy with a heavy sidewall.

They were also almost $200 less than KO2s. Been running them for over a year now, including lots of highway and moderate off-roading and I really like them. If they're available in your area you may want to check them out.


We didn't get a lot of snow last year but we got at least a couple of 8"+ storms and the Suburban did great on the Wildpeaks.

I can’t speak to the general grabbers, as I’ve never owned a set. But the falken wildpeaks he mentioned above^ seem to be a good tire. I hear a lot of guys say good things about them. When I had my Durango a few years ago, I had the predecessor to the ATW3s, and they were a good performing winter tire. They were heavier than snot and killed my gas mileage, and loud as hell on the dry pavement, but when it came time for snow, they delivered! I never had any issues driving in the snow on the wild peak tires. Good tire to look into.

I had the general grabbers on my old Jeep, they were ok in 6-8'' of snow but anything deeper than 8'' they kinda sucked...they were great in the mud

If you want an aggressive looking tire thats absolutely incredible in snow you should get the Mickey Thompson Baja MTZ's...I drove through 3ft of snow with them last winter with no problem...I rarely had to use 4wd with my tires last winter

Hmmm. If you're right, I really appreciate this. The old grabbers had 0 sipe, basically a desert racer. The x3 came out last fall (2016). Has full depth siping.

I think I’ve pretty much decided to replace my OEMs on the new wheels with the Terra Trac 2 from Hercules. It’s over $100 cheaper than the KOs too. As much as I want the BFGs, i just don’t think I can afford the cost

If I may ask, what is your use case?

70-80% on road. Roads here are bad though. We do get 6-18" of snow on occasion, also ice, and torrential rain. Tahoe is also the adventure vehicle, so it get's offroad for camping, hiking, etc. But the Highway miles is what I worry about. I'm a nurse, and travel a lot, so I need something comfortable, mostly quiet, but capable when I need it. People that I've spoken to that have this tire, who are usually quite picky about noise, vibration, etc, say it rides well and is overall rather quiet.

I've probably got 40k mor miles on the wranglers that are on the truck currently though, but I'm always looking for a sale!

Also, @Galante I'm looking at doing the 285's on it, but I really wanna put 305/65 on it. We'll see if its worth the extra $$$

I just got the green light to get my tires replaced. But I'm looking at upsizing my rims, as well; they are the OEM 16" rims, and I eventually want to do a big brake kit. I am looking at all terrain tires as well. I've been told Michelins are top of the line, and that Falken makes a good tire. I asked about tires in this thread, originally:

Michelin’s are the best for the money. The AT2 is a great all terrain tire, and is rated well. If I had the money I would use Michelin or BFGs.

Falkens, in my experience, are great tires for 15-20k.. and shit after that. I haven’t used their off-road tires though. Nitto also makes a good all terrain tire, that comes in a variety of sizes, and works well.

But if you’re looking to upgrade wheels, find a set of take-offs that have the new car tires on them still, and run that for 30-40k. That’s what I did, for the price of new tires I got tires, wheels, and new TPMS for all 4.

Unfortunately, take-offs don't really work for me. According to all the data I can find online, my wheels have a stud pattern of 8x 165.1; this persisted through 2010 (I have a 2005). The 2011+ are 8x 180. I found a TERRIFIC set of 2016 take-offs with the Michellin tires I want (in my budget, even). but the rims aren't going to fit.

Mulling this over again.... Seriously can't decide. I'm loving the looks of the x3 in 275/70/18.
