Sorry, this gets long as im thinking this out.
New cam got here today, looks nice but what do i know. Now i can start assembling the engine.
I'm going to degree the cam. Never done it before so im pretty sure this will be frustrating till i figure it out.
The biggest thing i need to know is the cam designed for the new style VVT or old style VVT phaser. I have both phasers but i need to use the right one and GPI did not know there was a difference as they did not know or remember what it was tested on and i would imagine very few have stumbled on this information.
Looking at the end of the cams side by side the pin position looks the same.
And here is why im questioning this.
The L92 phaser has 62deg of freedom, from 17deg advance to 45deg retard
The L99 phaser has 52deg of freedom, from 7deg advance to 45deg retard
I don't know if the cam center lines are the same or not between stock and the new GPI cam and now that i think about it there are more questions.
When asked, GPI said no one has ever complained about the cam not working good.
I have to assume the cam has been used with both new and old style cam phasers.
If the cam has been used with both phasers what one actually gives the best performance from the cam?
From what i read advancing the cam 1 tooth on a standard cam gear it moves the power band about 200 rpm lower.
If i use the old cam phaser the power band might start about 200 rpm lower but 10 degrees might be too much advance and could cause intake PTV issues among other issues.
If i use the new phaser the advance is retarded 10 degrees moving the power band up about 200 rpm.
The cam's power band is advertised as 1750 and up.
Maybe im way over thinking this and i just need to use the phaser that i can make the cam card match that i have no real idea how to use yet.
