Any suggestion is helpful Fless.
Again they are not exhaust bolts and for sure not windage tray.

Do not pay attention to how they look. The white chalky is from trying a new cleaner that dried and has not been cleaned off yet.

Guess i never noticed. I generally toss the tensioner with the bolts and the bolts usually stay in the tensioner when removed.
New tensioner come with bolts already installed.

Got the BTR V2 Trunnion kit installed today for the rocker arms. EZPZ.
Only tip i can offer is for what ever reason BTR wants the bearings installed with the markings out.

I have an old Craftsman floor standing drill press. Could not work on stuff without it.
It works great for a light duty press like the trunnion kit. Pushed the bearings out and the new ones in with ease. It has worked well for suspension bushings also.

Sorry, this gets long as im thinking this out.
New cam got here today, looks nice but what do i know. Now i can start assembling the engine.

I'm going to degree the cam. Never done it before so im pretty sure this will be frustrating till i figure it out.

The biggest thing i need to know is the cam designed for the new style VVT or old style VVT phaser. I have both phasers but i need to use the right one and GPI did not know there was a difference as they did not know or remember what it was tested on and i would imagine very few have stumbled on this information.
Looking at the end of the cams side by side the pin position looks the same.

And here is why im questioning this.
The L92 phaser has 62deg of freedom, from 17deg advance to 45deg retard
The L99 phaser has 52deg of freedom, from 7deg advance to 45deg retard

I don't know if the cam center lines are the same or not between stock and the new GPI cam and now that i think about it there are more questions.
When asked, GPI said no one has ever complained about the cam not working good.
I have to assume the cam has been used with both new and old style cam phasers.
If the cam has been used with both phasers what one actually gives the best performance from the cam?

From what i read advancing the cam 1 tooth on a standard cam gear it moves the power band about 200 rpm lower.
If i use the old cam phaser the power band might start about 200 rpm lower but 10 degrees might be too much advance and could cause intake PTV issues among other issues.
If i use the new phaser the advance is retarded 10 degrees moving the power band up about 200 rpm.
The cam's power band is advertised as 1750 and up.

Maybe im way over thinking this and i just need to use the phaser that i can make the cam card match that i have no real idea how to use yet.

Finally, real progress yesterday after noon.

Cam installed. Turns smooth like it should.

Crank is almost installed. The main bolts are torqued to 15fp right now. Had to stop as the wife got home with food after work.
I'll finish that and get the pistons installed today.

Are pistons installed yet? What ring compressor did you use?

For my first engine (4.020 bore) I used the adjustable version with the ratched mechanism and hated it...

Second rebuild was 4.000" standard bore (refresh job) and bought the dedicated 4.000" piston ring compressor. Easy and stress free!

If I ever do another one, I would definitely get the dedicated ring compressor.

I used the band clamp ratchet style compressor.
Though about buying a dedicated piston installer but i have used the band clamp style for more years than i even know.
A little tip that helps a lot that my grandfather taught me with the band clamp style. Around the bottom edge put several flutes in it. With the fluted edge it can not slide into the cylinder.
