And if hooking a water hose up to the core to flush it out, don't use full water pressure, half should be plenty. I have one of those on/off ball type valves on the end of my garden hose and usually only need it cracked open

Will flush with water hose!

Yep I had a couple rubber caps on the core ends, but the smell must be coming from inside.. or wafting in from somewhere

as I understand it there's an entire programming for voltage and battery maintenance in your trucks. lot of it isn't defined in hp. some ways I like that hp doesn't define things that aren't needed by everyone so to not over complicat tuning, other ways if you go down the ribbit hole far enough you realize how much they left out of how the routines run. gm used a bunch of math to calculate the battery temp and health. so yeah, the ecm is doing its thing and saying OK at this point the battery voltage should be this, and that's anywhere from 14v to 10.8v, I think I've read and then using the pwm output to the alt it will vary the signal to run that voltage it's requesting at that time. I believe you can change some of the numbers but I don't believe we can really make best use of the agm batteries. that would need an battery engineer level of understanding what the agm battery needs to last the longest and how to correctly maintain it. it definitely can be done, but I don't think with the level of access hp provides.

it has been done by gm thou, some cars use agm factory and they have done the programing for that battery. I have one with a agm and I just replaced it at 8 years and 95k miles. it still load tested pretty good, I replaced it more on age and load test. I ended up swapping it into another car I have and it's doing well still, probably spent that money for nothing.
what we'd need is full access to change all the parameters to what they used in the agm cars. or maybe even a segment swap like you can do when miss matching auto tranny swaps if the batterys at so different they wrote a whole new sub routine.

yeah.. to much.

The car you have with the factory AGM- is it a GM product? Can you monitor the charging characteristics?

I'd imagine that the only charging differences between flooded and AGM would be the voltage and amperage, because, what else could there be?

8+ years is impressive. I'm not trying to hyperlife this thing. If I get four trouble-free years out of it (the warranty period), I'll be happy. I got five out of the flooded O'Reilly Super Start, including considerable abuse for 4+ of those years. My goal is to not do anything damaging to it if I can help it.

Pretty confident on that sand or was your ass puckering at all?

I never checked up. My uncle reserved a spot for me and mama ain't raise no bítch. Uncle has a new AT4 Duramax and, ever since dropping that valve last November and needing a tow, I keep a tow strap to complement them tow hooks you hooked me up with. So, I'd be fine even if I did get stuck. I followed a Jeep from the road to the sand and they floated on top so I stayed with 'em, U-turned and backed in like I 100% belonged there. It was pretty packed, though. Really, I wanted to throw rooster tails when leaving but there were too many others around.

The ol' Steel Hippo can't let me down.

you can monitor the battery/charging status with the tech2

*le sigh*

I almost bought one a TYF member was selling a few months back but him nor I was very sure exactly what all was included as I was comparing it to the new ones and the contents list. Someone else got it. I might cave and get one if another deal pops up. So far, I've been able to get by with my Autel and HPT.

it is a gm but it's a volt. so I have never paid much attention to it. I jokingly call it my appliance. it is like a toaster that sits on the counter, it gets used daily and just always works. 90k miles and I've changed the oil 3 times and that's all I've opened the hood for. oem brakes look brand new. it's only had one set of tires changed haha.

to new for the tech 2. I'll have to see if the cheap torque app dongle tells me anything useful voltage wise. it doesn't even show battery voltage on the dash. lol.

Heading out into the rain and mosquitoes to do the drivers side drop spindle and cv shaft.

bring a fan, keeps the mosquitoes off you and hopefully avoid heat stroke haha.

I once had a impulse buy of a cordless fan. a ryobi of all things, their air cannon. I'm pretty anti ryobi as almost every thing is available in a different line up is better but man that fan has become my go to tool. i take it everywhere with me haha. had to change a ac belt at a rest stop once, throw the fan up top of the motor, come back 10mins later and nothing way burning hot. would have taken an hour and a lot of cussing without it haha.

If I'm doing something outside in the yard I'll just spray my arms and legs with Off!

If I'm in the garage I usually don't have problem with bugs/mosquitoes, but if I do I have a couple of these rechargeable Thermocell repellers that work up to 20' I'll turn on.

Thermacell Mosquito Repellent E-Series Rechargeable Repeller with 20’ Mosquito Protection Zone; Includes 12-Hr Repellent Refill; No Spray, Flame or Scent; DEET-Free Bug Spray Alternative https://a.co/d/1cjUl9X

Still smelling coolant!
Usually on cold mornings, start it up and when I open the door 5 seconds later, the smell seems to come from under the car.
No more smell after a few more seconds.

Heater hoses bypassed, new water pump & radiator..
I'm starting to think it's an external headgasket leak..?
Smell goes away quickly so I'm wondering if I'll even see any traces..

Pressure tester sounds like the best bet since I can check it cold.. (as was recommended many posts ago!)

Any other suggestions? Best way to look under the manifolds/back of head?
Drove about 200 miles yesterday, no coolant loss. Definitely smells of coolant most mornings though.

How long to do a headgasket?.. how about an AFM delete?

It's obviously a tiny leak. There's a chance that it only leaks when cold and quickly self-seals after expansion from operating heat. Your best chance to finding it is to look it over very carefully from all angles with a bright light when cold. Yes, the pressure tester could help. You should be glad that it shows when cold cuz it's so much more comfortable and safer poking around a cold engine bay.

A head gasket can be done in a day. The dry intake manifold and O-ring style seals of the LS engine make it a much cleaner and quicker job than the previous generations with standard gaskets, RTVs, etc. With the heads off, you're decently close to a full AFM delete. I'd say maybe halfway, labor-wise. It's such a teetering point to not doing the delete, doing the delete with the engine in the bay or pulling it to make the delete easier as well as a full re-seal.

If it were me, I'd go all the way for a one-and-done event. If now's not that time for you due to time and/or equipment, just stick to the head gasket. You'll just have to replace it again during the delete, but that one $30 gasket shouldn't dictate doing or not doing the delete. That's some dumb shit you leave to gluttonous morons such as yours truly.
