Quick question for you guys that have swapped the rear-end: Is the AXN 9.5" 14-bolt rear-end a direct swap for the 8.5" 10-bolt unit?

I'm worried that my rear-end w/195k is starting to make a humming/bearing noise, although I'm not 100% it's not the studded tires. Either way, I'm in the game-planning mode for a potential swap. LQK has some units w/lockers for $200-$300 plus shipping as reference, which would probably be cheaper (even after the $320 shipping fee) for me to unbolt the old rear axle and install a replacement myself... as opposed to paying a shop to diagnose and repair the issue. Plus, it would probably be a few hour job in my driveway.

Thoughts?

Yes, direct swap and you don't have to even change brake lines. But don't get an AXN from a pickup, different brackets for their leaf spring suspension.

We learned this week that the 2007 Denalis carried over the 1344 (Mechanics 3R or S44) universal joint size from the GMT800s on the rear axle. A conversion joint solved that issue.

On Ebay and even on LKQ, many vehicles are said to have the AXN axle but most do not. In the SUV, they were nearly ALL G80s and 3.42 gears. The majority of them were found under RWD Escalades (all models) and Yukon Denalis (both lengths). There are some odd balls out there that had them too but the main thing to consider when looking for them is that the axle has 14-bolts and not 10.

When buying from LKQ sight unseen, make sure the brackets and parking brake anchor blocks are not bent or damaged or broken from being dragged across the yard by a forklift.

I weighed my truck before and after the axle swap and the difference is 60 pounds. Well, the CAT scales use round numbers but close enough for tv.

Yeah, I'm looking at 2wd donor vehicles that have the G80 for my 2014 chassis.

I guess I was assuming that Yukon/Denali/Escalade XL rear axles, yokes, U-joints were the same exact parts used in regular (non-XL) chassis, and only the driveshafts were different.

Also, how much did LQK charge for shipping to NH for you? Im seeing $320 no matter where I order it from (from Georgia all the way to California - same rate).

Let's say I spend $600 for a 14-bolt, all-in, I'm guess that's less than what I'd pay to have a shop rebuild my 10-bolt (assuming there's bad juju happening). Im think of it as a proactive maintenance upgrade if I swap it before something bad happens.
$215 for shipping and mine came out of Georgia, as well.

For your 2014 truck, I would not expect a mismatch on the universal joint flanges, as that was only a 2007 issue. But, still make sure that it is from an SUV and not from a pickup.

Yes, to rebuild a failed rear axle would be more expensive than buying a used one, even with shipping included.

I'm now driving my truck with the 4.10 gears, but lightly, allowing the gear sets to fully break in. My first impression is the difference in feel is more like a slingshot effect off the line, rather than a neck breaker, which is fine with me. My speedometer is way off, but a tune adjustment over the next weeks will rectify that.

As an aside, the 14 bolt rear axle shipped with the original sway bar. I picked up that hollow sway bar with one hand, and it was like a twirling baton used by a Majorette. My Hellwig sway bar is a two-handed sway bar, and what a difference.

I want to again acknowledge and thank James (@swathdiver) for his guidance throughout this project. I could not have managed this project without his kind and patient assistance. ACHIEVEMENT EARNS RECOGNITION!

I have a few photos to share from this project that my builder took for me. Nothing really exciting or special, it just documents parts of the project.

Ok gang. Odor neutralizer. What works best?

The oil based vanilla can of skunk used on this vehicle is nauseating at best. I can smell it on my clothes when I get out of the Denali. Left the windows down for two days…nodda.

Seats have been wiped down, dash, I’m about to remove the second and third row just to see if it helps. I’m thinking the carpet will need to be shampooed or worst case - replaced.

What's causing the smell? Ozone generator might work.

I currently have one running. Hoping that will do the trick.

Dealer said “it’s an oil based spray we use, so yes unfortunately it can be strong and linger.”

It’s like they used one of those tuna can air “fresheners” to scrub the carpet and headliner.

Be very judicious in using an ozone generator. Too much usage will make plastic/rubber damaged/sticky, and think of how much of our vehicles' interiors are made of that.

Why did the dealer use that stuff in your vehicle anyhow?

I’m in Michigan. Vehicle came from SC. I’ve already contacted them about it.

Thank you. I wasn’t aware of that. Could that be due to most people not wiping things down after using one? Any time an ozone generator is used (office, laundry room, bathroom, car…etc) you HAVE to wipe down every surface.

You're welcome. No, this is not because it's depositing anything, it's because it's "melting" the materials -- you will not be able to wipe off the damage.

Oh dang, $215 shipping! I hate that they upped it by $100 for the same trip/same weight. How many miles did yours have?

I wonder if I wait until after January, and the "peak" holiday shipping crunch, that the prices will go down.

Took it to Cadillac Ranch in Amarillo, TX. a Route 66 museum in Santa Rosa, NM.

And ended up in Albuquerque, NM. for the night in front of a little 50's diner for dinner...

I think my Turquoise neon underglow matched the atmosphere quite well.

This was day 2 of my family's Great American Western Roadtrip.

No oil on the dipstick and a change engine oil soon light on the DIC is normal right?
Goes in hand with the overpowering air freshener, the seeping trans cooler lines and the engine oil cooler lines. ‍♂️

Try leaving some activated charcoal. Put a few packets--or however you find it--and let it sit a few days with the windows closed.
I knew a car wholesaler that used a few cans of coffee grounds(new)to get rid of cigarette smell. Person was a heavy smoker.

Some maphuggah tried running me off the road Sat night. I was in the right lane. I see this truck pull up to my left and a big budd wheel rolling into my lane, fuggin dually fender just missed my mirror. I had to slam the brakes on so I didn't get hit or pushed up into the high curb. Fugger had to be drunk. I lit his ass up with the high beams and horn and rode his ass onto the highway where he dropped the hammer up the shoulder about 80 MPH passing everyone else. Total jack awf. Some no baller poosay in his beat up, coal rollin bro dozer. fuch him.
