Truck just shut off going down the road! No warning or anything. Now the damn thing won’t turn over. You here the starter engage but doesn’t spin. Almost like it’s seized, but don’t know how. I pulled the valve covers and they had oil, so I’m assuming the rest of the block does too. Isn’t low on oil. Oil pressure was getting a little lower lately but within spec. I’ve had some knocking that I assumed were the rockers needing adjusting (just put rebuilt 906 HD heads on a few hundred miles ago), which I was going to do this weekend. Truck didn’t stumble or anything. I was braking, let off to go, and no go. I literally didn’t feel it stop. Any ideas? I’m probaby going to drop the pan to see if there’s any metal and see how the bottom side looks. Truck is at my office now, so will be a little more difficult to work on.

pull your starter and verify if it is dead or not, you can manually check it easily, your starter has a motor and a solenoid, the solenoid may be good but the starter motor may be dead, so you may hear it clicking (solenoid engaging) but nothing else would happen if the starter motor is dead.

Thanks, I will do that! Would that cause the truck to just shut off while driving though?

Not unless it is shorting out your entire electrical system, but then nothing would work.

@swathdiver has the idea that it could be the distributor gear, since I have to get my distributor replaced anyway. Gear was pretty worn.

that could be timing related as mentioned above bad distributor or timing chain jumped?, would seem odd for the starter to die at the same time though. I don't know if they still used the plastic coated timing gears in those engines or not.

I didn’t think about timing chain jumping. The one damn thing I didn’t replace when I had the motor torn apart hahahahaha

well unless your engine still used the plastic coated gear it's unlikely or if the chain stretched enough, my 1980 350 did it I got lucky just lined it back up put the new one on and it fired right up. I'm always Leary now of how they say these new engines no longer have to be done.

Did you put a breaker bar on the crank bolt to see if she's still turning?

Tried last night, but was trying to watch my back, since I was in the hood of Delray lol. Couldn’t take the time to figure it out with the fan on. I know I can get it on there, but was flustered.

If I lost oil pressure, would that cause the motor to seize? If so, would that mean lower end rebuild?

It’s been knocking for the last week, but I had oil pressure. Right before it happened I started the truck and it was at 5. Hit the throttle and it went back to normal. I don’t trust the gauge anymore, because it’s been finicky since I did the work last. 2 days before it happened, I turned the truck off, and about 30 seconds later turned it on, but it sounded as if it turned, got stuck, then turned over.

Got the truck fired up! Battery was shot. Putting out 120 CCA. Now, this is my only problem left. Valves need to be readjusted?

Collapsed lifter? Spun bearing? You hear the squeak for a second, but it was squeaking the entire time when it first turned over.
