Im pretty sure I blew the vortec motor in my tahoe. Makin a crazy rod like noise. Or lifter noise. Unreal. So what are my options as far as rebuilding or replacing this motor. Honestly if its not too much work Id like something different. Then again If its not too much money Id consider fixing what I got. Help me out here. What motors go in without too much modding? I still have to pass emissions too. thanks

383 Stroker w/vortec heads won't be too much of a challenge and you will be able to keep almost all the parts from your 350. It'd give you a performance gain for sure and would probably be cheaper than sourcing the parts for a 6.0l swap.

Agree with the 383, specifically the HT383E from GMPP. Completely legal swap (well, not in California apparently) and a pretty large boost in performance. Its pretty straight forward, and it is pretty much the same Vortec engine, of course stroked to 383ci with some other performance enhancements giving you 435 lb-ft of torque and 340hp.

Ummm a rod like noise and a lifter noise are a bit different. If you don't have much mechanical experience you might wanna get it looked at, for all you know it's an exhaust leak.

Heres the deal....Im not spending 4 or 5 grand on a motor. Not at this stage of my life at least. No way. So the bigbad 383 is a no go i guess. U mfs win the lottery or something were you got 5 mf grand for a motor? unreal. ANY LOGICAL SUGGESTIONS WOULD BE GREAT

The HT383E is a high performance direct replacement for the stock L31. Its not exactly cheap, especially if you have a budget. I'm not rich, I can't afford one either, but you asked what is easy and/or different. I mean, if you're looking for the cheapest route possible, then you would probably want to rebuild what you have if you can, especially if you can do it yourself. Or look for a low mileage used L31. Another option is a remanufactured engine; You get a brand new engine essentially, still much cheaper than the HT383E, and in some cases, cheaper than a rebuild (assuming you had your engine rebuilt by a shop)

You can either rebuild it yourself and come out a couple hundred bucks ahead of buying a reman motor, or get a reman motor from someone in your area. I know there are a couple places around here that have the Vortecs for about $1500-$1800...all you have to do is swap over your old parts to the new motor...ie intake and whatnot.

Do a search for "Location rebuilt engines" and sub your city in. I found this in my area on the very first link.

5.7 350 Pickup Roller 1996-2001 R 1195 500

That's $1195 for the long block and $500 core.
In Houston btw....wtf is land of Abe?

I got $3G into my Camaro's engine, wasn't all at once, more like over hte last 10 years. It's a long process for some of us ... some of us live at home with mom and dad with 0 bills and can drop paycheck after paycheck on a long block. LOL

I run the HT383E, great, strong motor. As far as options go, depends on you and the budget. On GMFS there is a guy swapping in a 6.0 into his 2 door. And for not too much money. It was a junk yard motor that ran. A crate 350 motor is a quick, easy cheaper solution

When my motor blew up, I ended up opting for a new long block GM crate motor. It cost close to $4000 including taxes and install. But I could have picked just a rebuild/repair of my original for $1000. A reman shortblock was $1500. But I was in it for the long haul, and I wanted the three year warranty, etc...

But to each his own. If your looking for the cheapest, then rebuild or repair your own is the best.

BTW, I know that sinking feeling that you have right now when you can't use your truck and are debating about what to do. It sucks......

Good luck with the search man. Try all the major cities around you. I found one place out of Chicago that had it for ~$1600, but you might be able to find one cheaper. Here in Texas everyone drives trucks and SUV's so the motors are cheap.

Dam i always thought a 383 stroker was a ford motor lol FML
This would be a good engine project for me when i start mechanics for the spring semester at a local community college. Just a quick question though, if you put in a 383 stroker, your stock 40L60E wouldn't be able to take all the torque right?? You'd have to upgrade to either a heavy duty trans or a 700 turbo tranny?? Thinking of putting this in my 4dr or aquiring a 2dr later on in the future.

Haha, mistakens happen man. Anyways, I've heard a lot of good things about them (HT383E). Bowtiefreak runs one in his rig if I'm not mistaken. I think the 4L60E is capable of handling the power output of the 383 as it was designed as a direct replacement of the stock L31. The engine does produce a good amount of torque but I don't think its quite beyond the limits of a stock 4L60E. Maybe bowtiefreak will chime in with some more information.

Well its not really the tranny Im worried about. I do believe that its capable of taking the 383 torque and hp. And I even found I old man that bought one brand new from jegs and wrecked his hoe b4 he could swap motors. Motor is still wrapped but he doesnt want to take the 20% restocking fee hit and hassle with returning it. Said hell take 3700 but even thats over my budget to be honest. Shit, Id love too but Im just about to move into my house and not to mention I gotta go um take a vacation soon for a period of most likely a year so Im in a bind. Think Ill just fiind a 350 beef it up mildly and swap it out. Would there be any issues I might run into as far as interchangeability?

Ive got WAY TO MUCH time and money into this hoe to just abandon her. I mean shit would be funny if I actually listed all the shit Ive done to this beast. If some of you who go wayyy back with me on here remember correctly this hoe was stock as hell when I got it. From the 456s to the lift, tires, rims all the motor work, true dual flowmaster, dual cats, the 3 tvs ( 4in, 11in, 21in), top of the line alarm, sound system, optima batter, big 3, msd ignition and coilpack, Airraid CAI, and thats just some of the shit. Man I gotta bring the hoe back better than ever right?????

Yeah, man. I'd do whatever I could to bring my truck back better than ever, even if I had to wait it out. You could probably find a used engine along with a stroker kit, and rebuild that. Then you'd have yourself a beast right there. I've seen people selling used Vortecs locally for cheap. Anyways, good luck man!
