As optimistic as we can all be, this will always be a realistic possibility. It was running fine sludged up, and cleaning doesn't cost much in materials. If it lasts a year or two, I'd say he got his time and money's worth out of it and hopefully will have a little put aside for a new/rebuilt motor. Or he'll just ditch the whole thing and look under the oil cap on the next used SUV.
Sure it was "running fine" but what we dont know is what exactly is going on in the cam bearings, rod and mains. How long has this engine been neglected for? I would have to say with that amount of sludge its been many a years. Most likely over 5 anyway. I would really like to see all the bearings when he ends up tearing engine all the way open. That would be very interesting to see. I have a 5.3L on the engine stand that had around 120k (according to salvage yard) when I opened it up and the cross hatch pattern on the cylinder walls looks new.

it won't let me upload. it started uplaying! Lots of VC tick. filled it with 5qt 5/30 1qt ATF. it went away after about 10min or so. drained the motor and filter after about 20min. oil was pretty Brown, with some chunkies. refilled with 6qt 5/30 6-10oz sea foam. it got a miss fire code on #6 which was the spark plug that was cracked I tried to reuse for my start up process.
drove it around the block, oil pressure gauge right at 40.

picking up a new set of cheapo plugs later.

we'll see, but I think this may be a 500k motor!

Maybe it's cuz I'm tired, but what do you mean by "VC tick"? Is that 40PSI at idle? Cold or hot idle? Give us some details on how the oil pressure gauge reads (PSI at cold and hot idles, at 1-, 2-, 3- and 4,000 RPM.

lifter tick. it's totally gone now though. it read 40 at idle, jumped to about 50 at 4k, then dropped back down to 40 during normal driving. it was semi hot when running.

just drove it again with new plugs/wires misfire is gone. felt good, sounded good.

I was thinking 60 PSI was the center number on the gauge and that 40 was kinda low (but plenty). I just looked up a pic of a NBS gauge cluster. I'd be happy with the 40 and 50 PSI! Good job!

This thread should be held on to by everyone. If I opened my valve covers and found that I would've been at a loss. Now there's a roadmap, provided it lives a long happy life obviously.
