I am a relatively owner of a 2003 tahoe and I have used the wealth of knowledge on this forum as an a guide in the process of getting to know the vehicle.
However, now I have run across an issue regarding how the seat heaters operate that I could’t find an answer to:
I decided to replace the bottom cover of the drivers seat as this was worn through as per usual.
I decided to also buy a replacement for the heater pad as it had burned through on one spot. The heaters would still stay on when I turned them on and the back heater worked as it should.
I bought the dorman 641-105 and installed this, and put everything back together, pushed the button, it stays lit in both high and low mode, but still only the back is producing heat.
So I unplugged the bottom heater and tried to get a voltage reading from the connector, however, when it is unplugged the heater will immediately turn off. I can see the multimeter registering something for a split second, but not enough to get a good reading.
I measured the resistance in the pad and it had a reading of 2.6 Ohms.
When I plug it back in the heater stays on, but still only heat in the backrest.
If I had a resistor available when I measured voltage from the connector I could have connected that in series with my probes and probably could read stavle voltage, but I did not have one at the time.
Does anyone know how this circuit work?
I thought it would have been just a resistive load, no «smart» sensing involved.
My old burned heater should be just an open circuit - just as if nothing had been connected to the connector, but as soon as I unplug it the heater immediately turns off.
Does it need a very specific ohms value to properly work? Seems unlikely, but I am stumped at the moment.
I dont have time to do it now, but I suppose I could connect 12V directly to the mat and see if it will actually produce heat.
I’d be curious to hear if anyone here knows how the circuit works, and if you have any suggestions on how to proceed.
