Grinding Noise Coming From Brakes

I've got a really rough, grinding sound coming from my brakes right before I stop. I'm assuming I need new brake pads (hopefully that's all). Anyone else have any experience with this or know what the problem could be?

check pads, maybe worn out, or dirty, or need replaced. Some are made from a harder material, and it sounds like two bricks rubbing against each other when you stop.
