gm put afm in corvettes and camaros. I believe the same part number lifter.
For a good 6 seconds, my eyeballs got REALLY big reading that sentence.
Wonder if I'll live long enough to see automakers make vehicles lighter ...
... which is why I've never really blamed this nonsense fully on the epa.
CAFE (& EPA) are (both) to blame for shoving unrealistic MpG (and emissions) targets on automakers.
How can GM make a V8 that achieves unrealistic CAFE (& EPA) targets without cylinder valve deactivation?

It's two routes you can possibly go. You can do a full Camshaft DOD/AFM delete and tune which would be the best if the engine itself is in good condition. But if you're thinking about engine swapping the 8.1L would be the best way to go. Strong engine that comes without the DOD/AFM and the extra power and durability couldn't hurt.

The design specs of two-mode lifters are simply not as robust as simpler one-mode lifters -
nevermind that quality construction is also a concern; on top of that frequent oil changes with true-synthetic motor oil is a requirement,
and most people don't know that dual-mode lifters don't like frequent high-RpM efforts.
Well that’s a nice design feature considering that these LS engines like to make a lot of their power in the higher rpm ranges.

Yea I'm thinking maybe a non dod swap
The thing is clean as a whistle and an ltz I'm the second owner of, I love the car so I'm definitely keeping it

Im by no means a car noob, I've done my fair share of wrenching and swaps but mostly on older vehicles and hondas
I'm the second owner of an '09 Tahoe PPV (bought from police auction) that just turned 160K and have been thinking about my options regarding AFM/DOD Delete Kit vs. AFM/DOD Disable. Since I have a PPV, the ECM is locked and I cannot disable the AFM/DOD via HP Tuners.
I fed all this information into ChatGPT and allowed it to guide my decision. I now have an accurate cost/benefit analysis for each option. If you do a AFM/DOD Delete kit, that can turn into a top-end rebuild really quick ($$$) when you start looking at all the other things you can address while doing that project.
For now, I'm replacing the original E38 ECM with a blank E38 from RockAuto and having my local tuning shop do the work of flashing, programming, etc. Roughly $400 all-in
I highly recommend consulting ChatGPT for your situation

Maybe you can't, but any tuner worth their weight in salt should be able to disable Engine Half@$$ ... unless it was previously tuned and locked by another AFTERMARKET tuner.
GM OE PPV / SSV 'tunes' are NOT locked.

quick search I'm like 99% sure hptuners works with the ppv ecm unless someone else has used hptuners on it and locked it for some reason. the police department and or gm didn't do that.

a email to hptuners would know forsure and maybe avoid Ai for info. I find it to be internet slop at best. it has all but killed Google for quick correct results. you gotta dig till page 2 and links to old forum posts. everything ai and Facebook groups is suspect.

Are you one of those chatbots? Trying to get support for your neural network. They are installing a pyramid here in Michigan to run the grid. I’m good living on a dirt road.
I believe you did get some good information from AI, but ChatGPT has never driven or worked on one of these vehicles. That’s why we have the forum, to bounce ideas and info off each other.

I can 100% confirm that a PPV can absolutely be tuned with HP Tuners. I have my 2013 PPV tuned to disable AFM, timing bumped a little, transmission tuned, etc. My tuner disabled the AFM and did similar tuning to several local police and sheriff's department Tahoe fleets in our area.

I believe it. all this ai info is crap. I just recently gogoled something I have looked up many times but can never remember the detailed steps. before it would pop right up. now with Google new AI crap I got random nonsense that was kinda close but not specifically what I needed. Just general nonsense.

we are all about to be dumber as Ai takes all the jobs away and replaces it with useless words that sound right but don't actually work.

I am a chatbot :boti:

There's no turning back on AI at this point. I decided to embrace it and not become "the old man afraid of new things"

Just like bouncing ideas around in this forum, you can also bounce ideas to AI and see what it says. Nobody here is 100% correct and neither is AI; don't be afraid :boti:

There happens to be an '09 ppv tune in HPTuner's tune repository.
Someone probably had it tuned, and their tuner locked it. Surprising that they didn't disable AFM..
I should call the public works dept. for the municipality I bought it from to confirm. Public works dept. did almost all the regular maintenance on it over the years.

I have (what I believe to be) a full service record history. The truck came with a 3" binder full of receipts for any/all work performed on the vehicle including the upfitter kit.

There is nothing in the service records that indicates they locked the ECM or anyone did a tune.

Either way, my truck goes in next week for the new ECM, flashing, programming, etc.
Performed a backup of the current ECM for reference in tuning the new ECM; I feel confident my local shop will handle it.

If you can read your current ECM, then it's not locked! Or am I missing something?

He told us he’s A.I. so of course he can read the ECM…even if it is locked.

I could read the ECM, but not write to it. Found out it was locked by a 3rd party while it was owned by the city I bought it from.
Just had the ECM replaced with new-blank GM E38 and now have full read/write access. Disabled AFM/DOD via HP tuners.
This should buy me time before I do a proper DOD Delete and freshen up the top end

Didn't know they could do it like that... (why?)

Glad you got it sorted, and thanks for the update!
