Will prolly find someone else with hp tuners to just disable it, I'm a firm believer in ill stop in the middle of the highway and push it before I overheat it.
lost a 383 stroker in a camaro to overheating, never again.
The sentiment is appreciated, and I tend to agree with it very strongly if it's safe to do so,
but I'm not sure you read what I wrote, specifically
... using the extra V4 mode by driving GINGERLY gave me about an extra 5-6min protection ...
protection against overheating, maybe I failed to make that clear?
... just enough to get me to a much safer spot to get flat-bedded ...
as in, I was in danger of physical harm by immediately pulling over;
there are still some neighborhoods in NYC where you do NOT want to wait for roadside assistance.

personally I wouldn't worry to much about the bottom of end at 260k if you know you've changed oil and stuff over the years, which if afm made it that long, I'm guessing you've done well.

I'd worry more about the tranny, well the torque converter going out and taking the tranny with it. if you've handled that, I vote full delete cam kit, and send it.

Yea so looks like I'm gonna do a quick fix on the afm lifters for now and probably vlom, and find myself a lower mileage motor to do a dod delete and a mild cam on for when it fails again also gonna disable dod via hp tuners

I don't think I've read thru everything. but is the lifter just stuck down and loose rocket not opening?

if so, you're high mileage, but you might unstick the lifter, turn it off with hpt and see how long it goes?

Hmm do I need a new vlom if I'm deactivating dod

are you replacing the afm lifters? the vlom has to match the lifter type. can't put a smooth plate on a afm lifter and no reason to run a vlom on a standard lifter.

this is kinda hacky, but it has worked for some if you caught it before you damages the cam or lifter.

@spsteve

This is exactly what I did on my 6.2. Had a lifter collapse but I was able to trailer it home so it didn’t wipe out my cam.

#4 was collapsed. I ordered the kit that CrazedPerformance sells (in the video he shows how to use it). Comes with a tool to unstuck the lifter as well as plug for the VLOM

Since I have a 2013, I have the updated VLOM so I still chiseled the gaskets around the towers

I got a OBD device on Amazon and I’ve been running it since. Not sure how long it will last and it’s more of a band aid. Deleting AFM wasn’t in the cards for me when my lifter collapsed. But it was much cheaper for me to do it this way.

I did the same thing before mine stuck, turned it off, got the block off, clipped the gasket. fingers crossed and hoped, as there's no delete kit known to work with my engine since it's different cam for the hybrids.

People will be able to chime in more on this than I will…

But I believe it’s not uncommon if you replace the AFM lifters that they will collapse again fairly quickly.

The last owner of mine said they replaced the lifters about 20k miles before it collapsed. And that’s assuming they actually replaced them.

Now I’m definitely not the most knowledgeable on this forum. But imo I would either unstick the lifter, full DOD delete, or swap.

I think AFM lifters can also collapse even if AFM is turned off. Not 100% sure on that one

The design specs of two-mode lifters are simply not as robust as simpler one-mode lifters -
nevermind that quality construction is also a concern; on top of that frequent oil changes with true-synthetic motor oil is a requirement,
and most people don't know that dual-mode lifters don't like frequent high-RpM efforts.

and gm put afm in corvettes and camaros. I believe the same part number lifter.

which is why I've never really blamed this nonsense fully on the epa. it's not like that zr1 hits fuel mileage specs and they still used it.
