Say, if I end up going down the path of replacing the motor, what years would be considered almost plug and play. It’s a ‘97 5.0L. I’m assuming it would have to be at least an OBDII vintage at least, correct? I think this puts me in the ‘96-‘98 range. How about going to a 5.7 from the same years? What would I need to be aware of?

The diagnostic process has started. Should be fun in this weather.

Almost certain it’s just a tune to your ecm for the 5.7 values As far as the engine. Not sure about the 400r trans if it’s the same on the 5.0 and the 5.7. I did a swap on my 96 c1500. I almost went with the 5.7 but budget was tight and it was a work truck. I bought a crate motor from Jeggs for under $2000 if I remember correctly

wjburken- 96-99 5.7 with some 5.7 2000's are acceptable swaps. I always grab computer too as a just in case timesaver. Your 5.0 injector mapping is different, but it may "learn". Tech2 nice to have here.

Thanks. Hoping not to have to go that route, but like to know my options.

Reminds me of changing an oil pressure sender for my neighbor's 5.3. Had blankets and a wood panel on top of the engine, and I laid on top of that to reach the back of the engine after using a stepstool to get up on it.
Next time, just do what I did. My buddy Casey is like 6'4", I fumbled around with mine, Superman style over the intake, for about 10 minutes. He says, get out of the way. 15 minutes later, I was firing it up...

Well…we got the intake manifold out and from what I’m seeing, I’m pretty sure it was a bad intake gasket.

Going to start cleaning it up and putting it back together. If it’s more than a bad gasket, going to have to have some different conversations with Joseph on how far we dig into this thing.

It is pretty nasty in there. That’s for sure, but it’s a 25 yr old motor.
