I guess my concern goes back to my original post: what is the most effective way to bring this up to the mechanic? If I caught him charging me for something he didn't do, he will either apologize (and all will be fine) or he will dig in his heels. I'd like to bring about the first option, but I'm not sure I can prove it strongly enough that he will yield.

An analogy: I order a steak cooked medium rare and it comes out medium well. I could send it back, but I would not trust the cook to not spit on my second steak.
