Transmission issue?

I have a 2015 Tahoe Lt with 252k miles (Woohoo!). I got a new trans at 223k miles, with more trans work at 243k miles under warranty because dealer screwed something up. Around 243k I noticed a loud metallic scraping noise from around the trans when accelerating. Also there is a noticeable but not severe clunk when going from 2nd to 1st. The scraping noise only lasts about 15 minutes and the clunk goes away after about 5-8 minutes. I just had car into my usual mechanic and had them check out the noise. They said it was the transfer case failing to shift out of 4wd auto into 2wd despite reading 2wd on the dial. They shifted it from 2wd to 4wd and back to 2wd and apparently the noise stopped. Well the noise stopped for a whole day but is now back so I'm not sure what the issue is. Both the clunk and the noise seem to be much more noticeable when its cold out.

I don't have the time to inspect the whole transmission or transfer case myself or take it back to mechanic as they are booked out. Has anyone had a similar problem and know what a remedy is?

Transfer case fluid changed 30k miles ago, I do not tow or accelerate hard, neither trans or transfer case are leaking,

Are you driving vehicle in 4-wheel drive auto?

Hope it’s an economical repair. At 223k miles with a busted tranny I would have junked it. With the miles you have the truck is going to need some work going forward routinely. The engine may be next but hope not.

But that being said new Tahoes are $$. Pick your poison.

Are you driving vehicle in 4-wheel drive auto?

I drove with it in 4wd auto and 4hi when we had 7 inches of snow and ice this last month but otherwise almost never shift it out of 2wd. In the past 10k miles I've shifted out of 2wd only 2 times, both in deep snow.

Previous owner put the new trans in soon before I bought it. I would not have spend $6k on a transmission on a vehicle with 220k. It did make it 220k on original trans and at 252k its still on original engine with no lifter tick so that's a shock.
