Here is the first post

Friends 2025 new purchase Yukon 6.2l L87with a 2025 build date engine, need to get actual build date for engine.
1200 miles on vehicle, 1200 miles on oil filter
1st Oil Change

Not so promising, but may be somewhere normal once we have more pictures from other members.

Note a 2 Filter Mags put on filter, you could see where they were mounted on the filter by slight film on inside of filter housing and we assume the discolored area of the filter media is close to where the 2 Filter Mags were located.

Will be interesting to see if this is "Normal" or "Abnormal" amount of debris in filter. Will also be interested to see what next few oil filters look like, hopefully the amount of material drops.

I another friend with a 2025 that I need to cut his first filter open and inspect this along with my 3, I have not had a chance to cut mine open, I have 3 so far for my 2024 with an engine build date of July 14, 2024.

Don't have any pictures , but I've opened literally every oil filter the truck has ever had on it (old left over habit from the drag racing days I guess).

Only the first oil filter (the factory oil filter it left the dealership with) that was changed at 500 miles had any metal particles in it large enough to be seen visually. Nothing close to what you're showing above has been in any of this filters since that first / factory filter.

I do also run a filtermag (basically an expensive piece of plastic that holds some strong magnets) on the side of the oil filter as well. There is always an outline of stuff showing where the magnets were on the inside of the filter can , but there has never been any large particles in it that I've seen (that first filter didn't have a magnet on the outside). And, of course, magnets only attract ferromagnetic particles, so bearing material wouldn't stick to a magnet anyway.

Have you tried using a pen magnet to see if the particles in the filter are magnetic or not? Depending on if they do, or do not, stick to a magnet could potentially lead you down different rabbit holes.

Might be a good idea to do an oil analysis to see if there are elevated levels of bearing material?

Generally oil analysis can only pickup on particles smaller than around 10 microns or so (which the human eye can't see, generally anything smaller than 50 microns is invisible to the naked eye). So an oil analysis won't show you a count of big particles (like the ones that you can see) but if there's big stuff floating around, can't image there isn't also some small ground up stuff in the oil too.

I just changed my oil last weekend and did not see any problem when I took the filter apart. I have a 2021 6.2 Suburban with 87,000 miles. I have only had it a year and in the 15,000 miles or so, This was my 4th oil change. I was using 0W30 but went back to 0W20 due to the possibility it will be going to dealer for recall inspection soon.

I think the big concern initially is the first oil filter or first few oil filters having metal in them. This is usually break in, assembly metals unless something is starting to go wrong early on.

It is still worth cutting filters open at higher mileage as well.

One thing that people should also consider is using a fully cleaned out drain pan as well because there can be material that comes out the drain plug that is not pulled up into the oil pick up and sent to the oil filter.

All the metal that ends up in the oil drain pan and the filter element does not show up specifically in oil analysis testing. Seems to fully understand what is really going on in any engine is to capture material in a clean drain pan, cut open the filter and inspect for metal or other particles and also get an oil analysis performed. A lot of work and extra expense but it will give you a better idea of your engines overall health.

Neighbors 2025 GMC AT4

Model Year - 2025
Purchased - New
Engine Size - 6.2l
Engine Build Date If Available - Not available at the moment, but likely a Feb 2025 build date?
Total Engine Mileage and Mileage On Filter - 411 miles on engine, original oil filter
Original/1st or what oil change number - First oil change

First 7 pictures are panoramic shots of the complete element. Pictures #8-#13 are closer shots of the debris in the filter. Clearly some metal in the filter. Have 3 filters to cut open on another 2024 6.2l that was bought new with the engine built just after the July 1, 2024 date. Will post when I get these cut open.

It's not apples-to-apples but I owned a Cessna 182 for 20 years and spent a lot of time working in the hangar with the mechanics at annual inspection time, and also helping them with repairs. Every single oil filter or filter screen (mine used a fine brass oil screen) in that shop got opened up and inspected, and oil analysis was run with every oil change on every aircraft, no exceptions.

I can say for certain that no piston-engined aircraft whose filter had that much metal in it would be considered airworthy upon inspection. Looking forward to seeing how this progresses for you. At the very least, if it's not fresh damage, GM left a lot of shavings in there during manufacture. Not good.

Model Year - 2024

Engine Build Date - July 15, 2024, 2 weeks after the end of the "Recall" window

What Number Filter - Original, 1st oil change

This is my 2024 Yukon Denali with a build date of 8/2024.Clearly there is some metal in this filter as well. So far, 3 new 6.2l engine oil filters cut open between 400 and 1200 miles, a 2024 outside the "Recall" window and 2 - 2025's and they all have metal. The 1200 mile filter was the worse by far, the question is it worse because of the additional mileage or would this filter looked the same at 400-500 miles? Not a good look for GM as 3 for 3 as these engines are not as clean as I think they should be.

I have the 2 additional filters to still cut open and inspect from oil change #2 and #3. Will post these when I have a chance to cut them open and photograph.

The first 7 pictures are basically a panoramic of the oil filter element. The last 8 pictures are close ups on specific areas of the filter element.

It is what is it, again, not a good look for GM. Need some others to post filter pictures, preferably the first oil filter, but any oil filter change would be a decent reference. I would suggest anyone that has a 6.2l regardless of build date and mileage to inspect each filter to see what may be happening inside your engine.

Everytime i see this pic.. i get mad about it again.. my 2018 slt with a 5.3 was clean as a whistle.. gm has done something to processing block/crank/heads as opposed to what my ‘18 had..

My sense of where we are: do a few oil changes before 1k to get the lousy processing/old tooling mess out of the engine.. second thing is quickly install a cache can.. quickly install a carbyte to eliminate running on less than 8 cyl.. i think the 0w40.. is partly there to eliminate coke build up on intake valves..

I have 7k on my 5.3 ‘24 yukon. I noticed just a blip when idling. I did an intake clean of the exhaust valves.. to get it under control. Mpg is up a couple. Now i have a cache can, running 0w20 oil.. and using 89 oct. i think you may need an intake clean every 7k miles.. will move to a 5w30 next oil change.. with the 0w20 my cache can has a 1/2” inch in it.. the heavier oil should knock it down.

The best v8 gm has built was my olds 403 in a ‘79 TA… quiet.. decent for its time.. i don’t know what has happened to the outfit that had so many different eights.. now they can’t keep a single family running..

The Olds 403 was the engine no one wanted when you were looking for a Trans Am. I would rather have a Pontiac V8 over the Olds.

Well.. i was quite poor… i was lucky to have one and be in college. It was 7 seconds to get to 60mph.. either of those two motors.. were great. Most of the 79’s were the 403.

Wish i still had it..

On the opposite side.. my last two f150s about put me in the hospital…

I did an oil change last week with a wix and Mobil 1 0W40. I am still pulling my travel trailer and decided since I have not heard from dealer about test, I am going to start using the oil they want me to go to. I have 88,000 miles and it runs like a top. I cut the AC Delco PF63 that I had on it and did not see any metal or anything suspicious.

I am going to perform the 4th oil change in the next few days on my 6.2l that has slightly over 10k miles at this point . This engine is just outside of the Recall window by a few weeks. I had to trip that caught me before I could get the oil changed, so my OLM is around 40% and I will have just over 4100 miles on this oil change.

Hopefully this oil filter will be almost totally spotless, I also have a magnetic drain plug and Filter Mags on the oil filter so we will see how things look. Will get an oil sample for analysis as well. I have every oil filter cut open and bagged with date and mileage so when the motor fails and GM tries to tell me I did not get the oil changed at their dealer they will have to see that this engine was over maintained compared to most anything on the road.

All I can say is the original 2-2025 6.2l oil filters that I cut open are just as bad or worse than mine!!!

Got a a link for an oil filter cutting tool? I've never inspected an oil filter in my life. I don't have any concerns on my 5.3, but I guess it can't hurt to check.
