Glad I'm not turbocharging or adding a blower to this engine. But now I'm curious to see how off this thing, when I get home I will take a looksie.

I lost faith in the machine shop near me when I took my heads in to remove my broken manifold bolts on a previous build. They claimed they could not use a welder to get them out because they were going to do more damage to the heads and that it was not possible. I know Steel and Aluminum don't bond to each other, but I did not want to sit there and argue. So in my effort to use a drill I broke the bits in side and ebay'ed some used 862 heads.they compensate for all of that during the initial Machining, so it really isn't anything we need to worry about. just a good reason if you're trying to turbo one, you either go the low buck. junk yard 4.8/5.3, don't look to close at it. and run it till it pops, or go aftermarket block. these in between builds can cost a lot of money and only be a a good as your machine shop.
That cam has significant damage - enough to make a racket because it's on the ramp:Hello my fellow contributors on this DOD journey, so the Engine is out and dissembled. one of the AFM Lifters has a shiny spot on the inner corner (I'll show pictures later) the cam is not chewed up at all (I was expecting some carnage but it has some uneven wear patterns kind of odd. My camshaft Bearings are a bit discolored, I showed pics to my cousin (works for Toyota) and he says his recommendation is changing out the cam bearings, I was hoping not to touch the bottom end but I guess I have no choice so this DOD is sending me down a rabbit whole to taking every bolt right out.
Will the main caps be reusable if not damaged or is it better to just get all new bearings since everything will have to come off?
I will post pics shortly
Lordy Lord!!!
Well, shit. Probably best to take it to a machine shop and have the whole thing gone through. Then you'll be as good as new. To answer your previous question, the main bearings and caps can be reused as long as they're not damaged, but since you're likely going to be visiting a machine shop anyway, might as well bring the crank and have them set everything up for you. Be sure to also have them check those lifter bores.Hey guys so as i was prepping to rebuild today. I took off the rear coversince all new seals were going to be used and low and behold this gem. The rear bearings has a bunch of little scratches. I ran my fingers and my nails woukd catch. Guess I will have to remove those bearing bushings after all
thanks already bought all the bearings after seeing this. I have done this job before so I have all the tools going to send the block to get it cleaned and honed tomorrow.Well, shit. pulleys can make some weird grinding noses too.. replace them as wellAt first i thought it was an exhaust tick. Then realized it was probably the lifters. After our annual roadtrip to Mexico (Guadalajara) its gotten worse. And one day i did the remote start and it almost sounded like it was grinding. So its time to get ready for the rebuild. Im on the fence about still about a regular camshaft vs a a stage 1-2. Nothing wrong with a little more umph!
But most kits a see on line have vvt deleted. Good thing i know what I am doing... Except for the tune, i need to outsorce that
every how many miles? 5,000 7,000? 10,000So after 180,000 of religiously changing my oil at the 50% life marker the lifters are looking like they are going bad and i am sure the camshaft is getting scored.
SO Its time to start looking for a cam and rockers that will be necessary for the DOD delete.
I don't know if I want to keep the truck as stock as it is or go with a mild stage 2 that does not need any major reprogramming and tuning.
So can any of you point me in some directions or threads to see if I can figure out a good build. like for example can I use a corvette/camaro cam with LS7 lifters and springs?
as I look at aftermarket brands, the more I research, the more overwhelmed I get with options.
Any help will be greatly appreciated, thanks.
What made you think exhaust? My headers have a couple of rusted through bolts. She ticks a bit.At first i thought it was an exhaust tick. Then realized it was probably the lifters. I had replaced the bolts with studs and the bolt nearest cylinder 7 was broken flush the tick started getting louder at that time which coincided with my oil pan replacement and oil pick up tube o ringWhat made you think exhaust? My headers have a couple of rusted through bolts. She ticks a bit.
