If I had days off It would be done but I only get a day and a half off this week. I need to do a lot of fitting on the brackets I cut off the old axle as well. I think I'm going to measure how far down I can hang the shock mounts off the axle without going below the bottom of the diff so I can get the longest length of shock without sticking anything through the bed. The Deaver springs I have are capable of something like 21" of travel, I know I will have to bump and strap it less than that but I want to use as much of what I paid for as possible. So if I hang it down low I need to make some gussets or something to make sure they don't get ripped off on trails.

why not 4link it with coilovers ?

Cause I already have nice springs, and the front will never be a full long travel kit. I don't want the extra width of long travel or the extra cost of ownership. I plan to put 10k miles or more a year on this truck when its done. Another good thing about leafs is they are about as simple as foolproof as they can be and when you're as dim-witted as I am that's a huge bonus.

The problem with them is, when you're a clutch-dumping drool monkey as I am, those flexy Deavers can lead to some hellacious axle wrap.

Your totally right and that was hilarious! But I have a shackle style ladder bar which solved it before and will solve it again. I contemplated going spring under to help even more but I don’t want to redo the hangers and shackles.

Those work pretty well when done properly. Put one on a buddy's XJ crawler that he swapped a manual in to. When hopping rocks with a manual trans, you can't be concerned about wrapping your axle. Oh- he had a bicycle brake lever on the shifter as his throttle so he could work the clutch and brake pedals.

It's amazing how well they work and how well they flex still especially compared to a double bar system. A bike brake lever for a hand throttle is cool as hell! It really is a biotch to try and crawl with a stick especially with a cammed LS, the tahoe will buck if I'm low-speed maneuvering in first gear. Its annoying because if I don't touch the throttle it wont buck but if I try to make teeny tiny throttle inputs it gets unhappy.

At this moment I was questioning my choice to use 2x4 trusses when I repaired this old barn.

Just don’t try that with the other end.
Of course not! It really isn’t that sketchy the weight was distributed over 6 trusses an obviously the bare frame doesn’t weight more than 1k. It worked so good because with no jack or stands support the rear I was able to roll the axle right in without any struggling.

Yeah it’s pretty light. I remember when I was a teenager our garage had 2 x 4 trusses and I pulled my 460 Ford engine out of my jet boat that way so I could build it. I had a beam spreading the weight over 6 trusses like you did but I started hearing some cracking so I quickly found a couple 4 x 4’s to add as posts. Luckily my dad came home after the posts were in or I’m pretty sure he would have killed me. I know I did some damage to a truss or two.

Got a whole lot done today! Starting by finishing up welding a few things that were too ugly to let slide. Then I wheeled the axle down the hill across the pasture to the shop to clean it up with the grinder and slap some black on it. This one pint of Chassis saver painted the axle and a bunch of the frame of the Silverado. I love this paint it’s easy and just works incredibly well.

Then it dried while I got a slab of ribs, came back and rolled it up the hill under the truck bolted it in and set the truck down in its own 4 feet for the first time in a long time!
