Well, I need to change the title of the thread to include my 13 yr old daughter Molly.:)

Today I needed to do some work on the Yukon including replacing the passenger side outside handle, passenger side speaker and changing the oil. Molly asked if she could help change the oil, so of course I said yes. Who wouldn’t want to spend some time with their daughter working on cars? She is a very smart young lady and loves to work with tools and build things. She has her own tool bag with a basic set of tools which she uses to fix things like her bike or tighten things up in the swing set out back. I’m thinking she could give her older brothers a run for their money in that arena.

Looking like a pro! I'm sure she's gonna want to get more hands on now. Does she offer to help Joseph too? There's some excellent brother and sister bonding right there.

I was cleaning a section in my basement where I'm going to build a workbench, and I came across a few photos in a box that I was looking for a while back, when this thread of @wjburken started about teaching our children basic trade skills, but I could not find the photos at the time.

We had a slow draining kitchen sink, and I was going to snake the drain pipe, and I wanted my sons to understand what I was doing. So, I had them get down on the floor and take a look under the kitchen sink before the job started, while I discussed with them what I was about to do to fix the slow draining problem.

I'm sure that you all know that plumbing jobs ALWAYS end up being MUCH bigger than they start out to be. So, here's a little story about the drain pipe snake job that turned out to be a complete drain pipe replacement job.

The sink was draining slow, so I decided to snake the drain pipe and free up whatever crap had accumulated in the pipe. I got my trusty drain snake, and I started pushing and pulling away, and quickly rotating the snake down in the drain. Something felt like it broke free, so I pulled the snake out to see if it snagged wherever was causing the slow draining of water. When the end of the snake came out, it had a number of yellow feathers on it. I thought, there is no way in Hell that a bird flew down the drain and got caught inside.

Then it hit me. My wife kept a yellow feather duster under the sink (shown above in the 2 photos). It turned out that the snake had broken through the brass drain pipe, and it trashed everything in the compartment under the sink, and snagged a few of the feather duster's feathers in the process. And so, my pipe snaking job became a complete drain pipe replacement job.

My wife and the boys (now men) still laugh about it today, but I can tell you that I was definitely NOT laughing at the time. I don't even laugh about it now (though I have evolved enough over time to get a bit of a chuckle out of it).

That's some Saturday morning cartoon material right there!

At least, before they were found offensive and cancelled.
