What is this box and why is the top wet with gas?

Filled with gas a week ago and it's been parked since. Much warmer today than back then, garage is hot. Notice faint smell of gas and found a small spot on the garage floor, then this. Wiped it with a paper towel, but it kept weeping from that center hose. Removed gas filler cap and a loud hiss began as it vented. Weeping stopped.

Vehicle started and ran fine.

Maybe just too full on a cold day and now the hot day is having an effect?

I hope.

Nawh, something else going on.

The plastic nipple coming up out of the box is broken. Not sure if it was, or I did it messing around. There is a white/beige e-clip looking thing on the elbow, but I can't see how to release it. If I could get that off, I might be able to JB the nipple temporarily until I can get to the next step.

There should never be liquid fuel in a charcoal canister -- vapors only. When filling the tank, is more fuel being added after the pump first clicks off? If so, that can cause the fuel to overflow into the canister, and that can destroy the canister's ability to store vapors. Or maybe it's being parked nose-down on an incline, allowing fuel from a full tank to migrate through the evap lines.

Neither of those. I may round up to the next whole dollar, but that isn't much.

How does that clip release?

OK, so you squeeze the clip instead of trying to retract/remove it like a normal c-clip.

But the nipple fully broke off now before I could fully remove the elbow ... it was cracked most of the way through, which just might be part of my evap leak code that keeps poping the CEL.

I may try to JB it tomorrow, or just order a replacement.

So, is this why the canister filled with gas, or is there something else?

When you fill your tank with gas to let it click once only or do you keep adding gas after the click? If the later then you may have forced gas into the canister.

After the bend the broken line goes straight down for about 8 in where it's connected to a looks like a steel line that heads back towards the rear of the vehicle. I agree with Fless however I would replace the short broken line.

Parts cannon loaded.

Evap canister, Valve assembly and purge solenoid for $150 or so. Should be here next week.

May not need it all, but figured I'd go ahead and get it thinking it will solve my code and CEL issue. Stuff is likely original.

Why do they only sell the valve assembly WITH the metal bracket that holds it and the canister? The bracket is fine and I can't see why it would ever need to be replaced. Adds cost and requires a bigger box to ship in.

Lines are all OK as far as I can see. It's only the plastic nipple molded as part of the canister that broke off.

I did this exact thing about 4 years ago just last month got a leaking evap code, not a bad run.

If the EVAP cannister is saturated with gas the purge solenoid is not purging when your driving, it's supposed to trap the evaporating gas fumes when the vehicle is off; then use engine vacuum when the vehicle is running to draw those trapped fumes into the intake to burn them

It is possible the broken nipple is allowing the fumes to escape before going into the cannister, causing the appearance of raw fuel & the smell; but that should throw an EVAP code for a large or small leak as the vacuum will be too low within the EVAP system

That's what I was getting before all of this. I could reset it with a code reader, but it would come back a while later. I've probably reset it five or six times since I bought this vehicle.

I had no idea how to find the leak though and it ran fine. Maybe this was it all along.

.

I have a recurring P0442 code for 'small evaporative emissions system leak'. Auto stores will sometimes reset it for me, but they don't seem to want to and it just comes back after a couple of months. I don't know what causes it and don't have the money for a shop to fiddle with it for days to rty and find it. There are no operational problems that I can see. Runs and starts fine.

Part one arrived today finally ... and yes, it has the metal bracket. I was thinking maybe the picture was wrong makes no sense, but it was an easy swap. Not sure when the other two parts will be here.

Were you getting a P0442 code?

Hoping that solves your problem. Those can be very pesky to deal with. I believe a shop can run an evap smoke test to discover the leak, but hopefully that does not become the case.
