I have a recurring P0442 code for 'small evaporative emissions system leak'. Auto stores will sometimes reset it for me, but they don't seem to want to and it just comes back after a couple of months. I don't know what causes it and don't have the money for a shop to fiddle with it for days to rty and find it. There are no operational problems that I can see. Runs and starts fine.

Have you fixed this yet? If not, wonder if it's simply your gas cap needing to be replaced. If that's it, should clear on its own once a new cap is installed.

I got a new gas cap because the previous one had a lock that didn't always seem to work quite right. This one does not lock. Code issue didn't seem to change.

The parts store kids don't test or clear your codes (properly)hell 98% of them don't have a clue about anything gone are the days when you had to actually know something about cars to work there you can get a cheap scan tool for around 30 bucks it will help

This sounds totally unclear but seems to present a fire hazard. Not sure how one "discounts" negative.

OBD1- short the proper pins with paper clip, watch code 12 flash. It's in the service manual.

Grabbed a Zurich ZR11s from HF with a $20 off coupon.

Charts say it will do what I want.

If anybody thinks it's junk let me know before I open it and cost myself a $20 restock fee.

That is an OBD2 Scanner. Wont work. See post13 above.
Download the service manual for free and it will save you headaches

He must have a OBD2 Vortec truck?

"Clearing codes" is something I almost never do. All that does is causes you to drive it more until the drive cycle is complete again, only to see the code pop up on the dash again. Could be instant or could be 20 miles of driving.

Only exception is if I know the code was set because I was messing around with something and disconnected a sensor, or something like that.

Probably a service manual diagnostics table for that code will help, if someone has one?

Works. Pulls up all sorts of data and records 'Live Data' while engine running. Also has an Enhanced Code mode for GM products which showed all sorts of MAP sensor and other codes (about 40) but I can't tell when they were set or if any work was done afterwards.

It allowed me to clear everything, so I'm back to no codes and no Service Engine light on the dash.

I'll try to record live data next time I drive and see what it shows over a longer run. I only did it for a few minutes in the garage, but it reacts to throttle with RPM which matches the Tach on the dash.

Initially it showed the same Evap code as noted above.

Connect to my Tablet using RepairSolutions2 which saves data and can be reviewed.

Also does ABS codes which showed me 'Front Right Wheel Speed Sensor' errors and a couple of others. Might look into what it takes to deal with that.

Not really concerned about the Evap code since it doesn't affect operation and we don't have testing here.

As shown below, 8th digit is 'R' for 5.7 Vortec V8
