Blackbear has tuned this one for me already, and I asked them to tune it for towing. It doesn't hunt, really.
It's just that when the topography looks more like a sine wave than a pancake,
it translates to downshifting every other mile as it has to keep speed on the climbs.
If I run in 5th, it rarely ever needs to shift. I've read over the years that this is perfectly acceptable practice, until now.
The stuff you read over the years never accounted for the possibility of aftermarket tuning;
more than likely what you read pretended aftermarket tuning was nonexistent.

It is 'perfectly acceptable', but tuning would be superior.

But that’s what I’m saying. It *is* tuned for towing duty. It holds a higher gear as long as possible. When it downshifts it’s because it ain’t got no more ass to give without more RPMs.

Thought you said
It’s most comfortable in 5th, and can hold it up most mild-moderate grades,
so I hold it there to keep it from hunting when we’re driving over the piedmont areas of the blue ridge.
Lots of up/down on I-64 west of Richmond.
I've never driven there before, only you (and your tuner) would know for sure
if this particular part of the journey can be addressed by 'fine-tuning' so that you would not need to hold it in 5th yourself.

Put another way ...
It *is* tuned for towing duty. It holds a higher gear as long as possible.
When it downshifts, it’s because it ain’t got no more ass to give without more RpMs.
My version of a Tow / Haul mode would not hold a higher gear 'as long as possible', and would downshift sooner,
slightly before 'it ain't got no more ass to give without more RpMs'.

Admittedly, this could require more than one or two tries to get it right.
As I said before, I've admitted that I didn't always give the customer quite what they were hoping for on the first try.
I also said
I'm aware that there are certain situations where you'd still prefer to use Manual-5.
If you're happy with what you got from your tuner, pop the bubbly.
I'm just saying that if you want a lil pepper(corn) or Parmesan, you'd not hesitate to ask,
except maybe if you didn't know they were available in the first place? (Unless they ran out?)
Even if you're pretty happy with slightly less toppings, you should be able to ask for more if that'd make you more happy.
