Weird looking Diff Gear Oil

So my rears been whining which I'm already sure on it being the pinion bearing,so I'm fixed getting everything I need for that.But besides the whining the truck has been very hesitant on acceleration Lately.So I pulled the rear cover only to find the most broken down oil I've seen

It looked dark an stuck very bad I put in two quarts of gear oil for the time being until I actually get around to do the pinion bearing..
Now out of Curiousity is this suppose
To catch any metal shavings from the diff

Yes it is. On my ranger when the differ went bad there was chinos of like shiny looking things and I got the bearings in it and it still whines so if I were u I'd just get a junkyard one....

O and that's how my trans oil looked like when I was about to get it overhauled lol. But differ oil smells weird.... Like an awkward smell

Yea I think I'm just gonna save up an get a new ring an pinion a new diffan all the bearings crush seal shims all the works ,another thing is too I noticed there was a gasket but no rtv sealant around it I mean is it usually or another ?

Trust me as soon as I started taking out the the third bolt it started leaking out an smelt horrible I even looked around the bolt holes after I took off the plate an there was no sealant at all

Lots of water got in there, that's the nasty looking foam you see. The contact surface of the gears looks good, so your ring and pinion are set up good still. The water thinned out the oil and most likely caused the bearings to wear badly and overheat. That's the bad stink. Diff oil stinks anyways after use, but bad stink is a sign.

Having the diff leak with as few as 3 bolts is just fine.

All those shavings came from the bearings, all of them. I think that if you had the pinion and carrier bearings replaced, that diff will keep working for many more miles.

Thanks man I appreciate the in depth answer helps me to understand more but I'll definitely be spending the 100 bucks at napa to get everything running good again,going to pick up a magtec cover an some royal purple an call it a day
