Transmission gone... does this rebuild estimate seem fair?

Ewww, $7k+ for a rebuild on a 6SP 6L80 in a ‘16 Yukon SLT is full blown dealership rate territory.

Unfortunately, not everyone has time to burn on shopping a deal when life’s coming at you with kids, work and weighing in you’ll be in a rental or down to one car.

In the end, all that matters is the job was done right and you’re moving forward again to offset the financial event. Glad you’re up and running again.

Here’s a sample of my recent rebuild I made a post on it a few weeks ago, On top of that I provided the Zip-kit and billet converter. In actuality it was around $4500 total for me. He even did my transfer case fluid change for me as a bonus. 93k miles the trans went out. Took 7 days for the job. Excellent shop too. There are still good trustworthy shops that charge honest prices. You just gotta look around.

A coworker asked me for advice on his 2018 Silverado. His transmission went out at like 104k. Phoenix Transmissions in Weatherford, Texas was highly recommended by the guys at performancetruck.net

I can't recall what he told it cost, but somewhere between $4500 and $5000. They took a while too, but last I heard truck was running better than before. They told him they had like 25 or 30 trucks in their shop with the same exact issues.

Does a new transmission show up on Carfax? With all the transmission issues in these I'm surprised I havent seen any replacements on the CF's while shopping for one.

I don’t think replacing a transmission is no different than replacing an A/C condenser etc. It might show up if done at a dealership? But I do t think it would necessarily be frowned upon. Personally I’d look at it as a bonus if I seen that in a used vehicle I was considering.

Phoenix Transmissions is a great transmission builder. I ran one of their units in a TBSS I owned and drove many years ago that was leaps and bounds above the GM OEM unit it replaced.

It seems like it should show up. I might have looked at 50 CF's in my search and didnt see 1 replacement. Definitely could be seen as a plus, especially if there was to still be a warranty on the replacement.

That price seems within range…

Does this include a new torque converter?

The clutch discs and steels are the highest wear items in the transmission.

A lot of transmission rebuild shops will use either different thickness clutch discs/steels and/or different tolerances in order to allow them to add additional clutch discs over OEM transmissions. From my experience this usually results in a higher quality rebuild and a transmission that can last longer than the typical “GM Remanufactured” or “GM Rebuild” transmissions.

That being said I don’t think clutch discs and steels are considered “mechanical parts”; But I would ask if a burnt out clutch disc sends debris through a mechanical part causing it to fail is that mechanical part now covered under this warranty.

I would also then ask them if the lifetime warranty requires you to have them do the transmission fluid flush service at their location, or if you can go to a BMW Service Near Me. If so, this isn’t necessarily a bad thing; I would just clarify so you know what you’re getting into.
Yes, that estimate is fair for a 6L80 rebuild at a reputable shop. Labor for removal and inspection at $1,420 and a rebuild range of $5,680–$6,350 with a lifetime warranty is typical. While rebuilding, consider upgrades such as a heavy-duty torque converter, a shift kit, or an upgraded transmission cooler to improve performance and longevity.

Well seems like I'm going to need some work done on my 2019 6L80.
Suddenly today it started flaring on shifts and rpm is fluctuating while I'm at a steady MPH.
Just crossed over 125,000 miles today funny enough too. Guess that was the tipping point..
Reaching out for quotes now but from this thread I venture to guess it'll be $4k-6k
Might see what a GM reman costs to have them throw in.

Update:
Just lost all forward and reverse gears while on the way to Home Depot just now. Had to get AAA to tow me home. Really took a dump quick.
Going to go with a GM reman and upgraded converter.

First quote I got seems high.
$4878 for GM reman
~$1423 in labor
$400 upgraded billet converter
fluid and other seals etc
Total comes to $7925
Ouch.

Dropped it off at the dealer of all places.
Quoted me $7180 for everything.
GM reman trans, new TC. 36 month, 100,000 mile warranty.
Should be ready for pickup Monday.
Ouch. Both those numbers seem high. Especially just for a reman. If they had a list of what parts the used/replaced it would be nice. Nonetheless, that seems around $2k higher than a trans shop would have charged to rebuild yours.
Hope all goes well with the new one. Make sure to check and see if they disconnected and bypassed the trans cooler all together. Not uncommon for them to do so.

Part of what you are paying for is the warranty

Someone mentioned a “lifetime” warranty. That would be nice if they honored it.
Roll that tranny in there 49 years down the road. It’s just a frame, partial engine and the tranny. Like some skeleton rat-rod relic from the 40’s or 50’s.

For my area and the quotes I was getting from different shops about reman swap vs rebuild etc they all were in this price range and the dealer said 2 business days for install.
I'll definitely climb underneath and flip the pill again so it bypasses whatever stupid new thermostat they are supposedly going to install.
Apparently it has a new tc. Service manager said that part number has been superseded 3 times so clearly GM knows it's a terrible quality part.

Doesn’t mean they are using a billet or welding them before install.
Fingers crossed. I hope it all goes well. Look into getting your shift patterns adjusted after all is complete. It will help you from burning up the clutches so quickly. Cheers!
