When replacing my fuel lines for my 98 Tahoe 5.7L 4wd/4dr the shield on the side of my gas tank just fell out. It was extremely rusted. What is the function of this piece of metal attached to the gas tank. It is adjacent to the drivetrain but also close to the muffler. Is this designed to absorb impact like a skid plate or is this a heat shield? Could I go without this?

On my four door I have a plastic gas tank with that shield over it. I'm sure it protects against punctures. Easy to replace and didn't cost too much. That shield you talk of was all one part and it fit under the tank and the straps held it all together.

That is a heat shield that is required for fuel tank protection from the exhaust system only. It is not designed for any impact or skid plate related issues.

Do you know where I could purchase this heat shield for my 1999 Chevy Tahoe 5.7l - 8 cylinder - 4 wheel drive?

You can try calling a dealer, they can search nationwide inventory for the part number (15733382). If you’re lucky, someone may still actually have it.
