My process is evolving and I am moving faster. I hope to prep whole truck within next couple weeks.

1. Currently I take a panel,
2. Wet it down,
3. Block sand with 340 in cross hatch patern
4. Dry panel and find blemishes.
5. hand sand blemishes with 220
6. feather out blemishes with 340 by hand sanding
7. Switch to dry sanding with 340
8. Look for spots i missed and sand them by hand
9. Whipe panel with damp cloth and continue sanding until entire panel is sanded.
10. Grab scrotch bright sanding pad and hit up edges I missed.

Curious, some of the edges refuse to feather out. I think the sanding powder is bilding up in them as i sand and keeping me from knocking down the edge. Any tips? Or is this just always solved with high build primer?

See picture below... I cannot get this edge any better. Oh and for fun the face in my door.

The primer will take care of it. I would cut out steps 2 and 3. No need to wet sand. Just sand the worse spots with your 220 , block panel with 320. Prime any area that needs it. Sand primer with 320 , spray paint.

On to more questions lol So my overall plan is to disassemble the body. Remove doors and panels to paint them. Partly because truck has 235000 miles on it. No rust, mostly free of dents, however paint shows it. There's spots inside the door jams, and on inside face of doors where paint has rubbed off to metal (pictures below). Also I've taken doors apart and off before so not intimidated by that part. Just never painted them.... I'm trying to picture how process will work with painting.

1. How do you secure door for paint? On sawhorses?
2. How do you spray both sides? I'm kind of picturing the door laying flat. Do you have to finish one side then go to bottom side? Or do you prop door up somehow to get both sides at once?

Any additional tips? Or perhaps there's an easier way to touch these bare spots on doors and door jams?

Being your truck is black , just lay the door flat on saw horses. Paint the inside first , the when dry flip and paint the outside. When painting the outside be sure to back mask the inside from overstay.

I learn more only to have new questions lol

1. Dandruff and white edges. I am assuming this is delaminating clear coat and muat be knocked down? Some areas I am nearly to metal and it still persists?

2. Orange peal? I keep sanding and I have little pockets catching powder from sanding? Do I have to knock that flat?

3. I found an electric 5" DA palm sander at walmart. I am woundering if this will work to prep my hood which is nasty to say the least.

The dandruff is clear that is just of the what you have been trying to sand off. Yes orange peel needs to be flattened out , after you sand the panel with 320 , take a red scotch brite pad and go over the panel . It will get the last bit of shine from the paint. Yes that sander would work.

Ended up finding a sander on amazon with variable speed so snagged it.

I took it a d hit some of the pesky dandruff areas with it, and a 320 gritt disk. It knocked em right off but I think I will have to re blcoksand those spots now. Very tricky to use unless pannel is flat (at least for me).

The sander didnt come with a soft interface pad. I wounder if I should buy one of those? Maybe I could do more of the sanding with it then and block after?

I also marked what I am cally factory orange peal. I am assuming that needs to be knocked down till isnt shiney anymore.ac8b6503bba2d02ce3d7c11d188a559e.jpgd9237e568877d7b3e0c040abf2ddb618.jpg94b90587b5c09dd8d97d639babe77f5e.jpg3f343cfbb1d32c54a418aaa8cbd83a0c.jpg

Making progress :) Few questions:

1. I'm using softened water to wipe sanding dust off. I'm curious I saw somebody on Youtube use, distilled water, rubbing alcohol and vinegar mix to clean as it prepped car. Does that work just like grease and tar remover? Otherwise what do you recommend. This dust is a PITA.

2. I'm getting close to starting on the little body repair... Have a half dozen or so door dings to fix. I bought Kombi SPOT putty. I'm assuming I spray etching primer first to seal metal, let dry, then do putty, let dry and sand, do 2k primer, and lastly sand with 300grit for color coat?

3. I have some stupid protective plastic on rocker arm. I want to remove that, sound down outside of rocker panels so they can be painted as well. Will paint them with Raptor Liner. How do I remove that dumb plastic tape. It's pretty stubborn.

4. I a few people come to my door to do bible study. The gentleman that came last time built hot rods. He recommended also doing a seal coat prior to color and clear. What do you think?
