I am building the motor. Bought the block from an engine builder. He recommended a lifter but unsure which one it was. Do you know what lifters you used?

I used Morel 6504 drop-in lifters when I replaced my Castech heads this summer. Mainly because they were the only ones I could source at the time and had good reviews. The LS7's were back ordered everywhere.

I need to figure this tune out. I have HP tuners. I can pull tunes from their repository, they have various years / stock tunes.

I need to find a setup with 4L60E or 4L65E and LQ9 (no AFM or any of that crap too haha) does anybody know a year make and model that ran that?

Morel seems to be the talk of much discussion on the various forums. I just pulled the trigger and ordered a set of Morel LS7 style lifters. They weren't cheap, $300 w/ taxes :| Still cheaper than the Johnson lifters that were like easily that for a couple lifters haha. But I suppose if I'm going to build it I better build it right the first time ;) THanks!

I'd have LOVED to get those linked lifters but then I suppose they wouldn't have worked with the LS trays :/

Also spoke with my buddy who used to build these trucks for GM. He said the Delphi lifters are complete crap. To avoid them at all costs.

Ah $hit! Stupid eBay. I thankfully looked this up but appears they have already shipped the lifters out. The seller of the Morel's never put any specs on the lifter other than LS7. This seems really ridiculous however, the manufacturer's spec says a max cam lift of 0.360" for this lifter. I ordered the Morel 6504. The LQ4 cam has over 0.4" lift alone :/

Can't remember if your truck is a NBS or NNBS and you don't have a sig. If it's a NBS find a tune from a 1500HD they had Lq4s and 4l65Es.

Really copying tunes from the repository won't get the tune right it might get it decent but setting up histograms and data logging a few different ways is the only way to get it right for your vehicle. Do you have an AFR gauge?

Surely that can't be correct? They're advertised as drop-ins and every stock LS cam I've just looked up is more than .360". Most "low lift" cams are .500"+. I've got them in my L59 and have a thousand miles on them. They're said to be very close to stock size so as to not have to mess with preload. I used my stock pushrods.

I paid $249 in June because it was the only place I could find them and I wanted the truck back together....turns out, I could have waited because one of the refurb heads developed a crack in less than 500 miles.

Googling indicates the Escalade came with an Lq9 and 4L65E for the 2004 Model year.

Please forgive me for correcting you, but the 1500HDs came with Lq4s and 4L80Es. Vortech Max came with Lq9 and 4L65e. The Sierra Denalis came with Lq4 and 4L65Es.

I need to buy an AFR gauge yet. I'd imagine a stock LQ9 tune on same build of motor would get me closer than the LM7 tune? My plan is to build an LQ9 so wouldn't the tunes be the same from the factory? I assume the factory doesn't custom tune each motor off the line?

I'm not sure what NBS or NNBS means? My truck is a 2001 Z71 Tahoe LM7 / 5.3L (blown up now). Building a LQ9 to swap in. I may swap cams but for now I have a LQ4 cam very very similar to the LQ9 cam. My assumption again is the LQ9 base tune would get me in the ball park for a cam swap, or at least much closer than the LM7 tune?

Excellent, my guess was correct :) I downloaded the factory tune for that. I hope it would at least get me closer than the LM7 tune my truck came with and not be programmed for different gear ratios etc.

NBS (New body style) just means it's a 2000-2006 model which is good I know a decent bit about tuning those.

Yes, I agree an LQ9 tune should get you closer but you will still need to put in your injector data for whatever injectors you are using otherwise it won't run right at all. Also yes you are correct they all get the same tune off the line and they let the long-term fuel trims build-up and it helps them run a little better as they are driven more and more. But it will run terribly if at all if you put a decent size cam in it so you will need to do tuning on your own which isn't hard just a little time-consuming to figure out at first. I'm more than happy to help with any tuning questions, I'm far from being a pro but I'm really enjoying it and have tuned a couple of trucks so far.

I wouldn't run that tune itself I would instead copy a few of the tables over to your factory tune. Such as the VE table, Base Idle Airflow, MAF Frequency, and possibly the spark tables.

Almost 20 yeara ago I built a LT1 and did a cam swap. I tried to retune wo AFR gauge. was a royal PITA back then the gauges were silly expensive and I was broke college kid. I finally paid someone else to tune it. Wasnt perfect tune but worked as I mailed off ECU to a tuner.

I would love to tune this motorand have HP Tuner setup for it. I am confodent I cpuld handle loading stock tune. Just scared manipulating fuel maps :/

I def need AFR gaige tho.

I had other people tune my stuff for years and just recently started getting into it myself.
I highly highly suggest watching Goat Rope Garage videos, might have to watch them 12 times before it sinks in but this is where I learned the majority of it. AFR is 100% mandatory and makes it very easy.

We built a open wheel racecar when I was in college. Intake had to be restricted for our class of racing which meant had to custom tune the engine, was a honda CB600 if memory serves me right. Super fun, I drove a unrestricted setup :) 140hp 14000rpm (something like that) geared down from bike setup we pulled engine from and put in our racecar. weighed approx 400 pounds minus driver. Some of the cars could hit 60mph in under 2 seconds. The last car I worked on could pull over 2 g in a corner. I think we got 1.4g in the one i drove. It was insanely fun. We took it to regular unrestricted races and were untouchable, always aboslutely crushed street cars haha like tricked out vipers, vettes, lotus, ferrari etc anything really that was designed for street couldnt touch us despite being exotic.

I am not sure what cam is gd. partly why I haven't settled on a cam. Whatever I get is important I don't sacrafice anything down low.

I saw a review on sloppy stage 2 but he cut off his dino graphs at 3k rpm :( Seems to be an affordable cam tho.

I think brian tooley makes some gd stuff too?

Another person suggested a custom grind but that is really expensive too.

There is a crazy expensive monster comp cam that makes power across whole way but not sure about it as is like $450 or something.

Maybe I just need to pony up$$ or does anybodybhave good results with off the shelf cam?
