So the selling dealer did the Pico test (vehicle passed) to my new-to-me 2023 Yukon on 1/27/2026 at 48,967mi and updated oil to the 0W-40 viscosity. I did an oil change this week at 50k miles to get on even 5k intervals. Also added a catch can and Range DFM disabler. Concerned to see this…

Lol maybe using this oil cap will help .

Are you absolutely certain the drain pain had no debris in it?

Number one.. change the oil and filter in 500 miles or so. Check again for debris in the oil. Also.. document your findings.. so you can demonstrate facts of your concerns... get a magnet on the drain plug. get a filter kit so you can see what is inside the filter. might be more to see inside...

basically.. in a big environment.. like a power plant... you monitor the debris on the magnet at each oil change.. this gives you a feel of how much wear is going on and when the end is around the corner.

debris looks like rollers.. valve train... lifters.

not great. basically the end of a lifter. or few of them.

change the oil and check the filter guts and drain. good luck.

you are still under the 5 yr and 60 on the engine.. that is good. i am not sure the 150k covers lifters.

i am really sure.. an 8k oil change is not helping the motor. i do 4k. direct injected leaves a lot of carbon and other stuff in the oil.

Yes. I clean that drain pan thoroughly after each use and inspect it just before using again so I’ll know that anything found isn’t outside contamination.

No way around it: that is alot of metal debris for 50,000 miles.

@PPK_ Here's what's crazy... That pic of the oil with metal debris has 8 miles on it. After the initial 0W-40 fill done at 48,967mi by the selling dealer, I wanted to start fresh with 5k mile oil change intervals beginning at 50k miles to keep things easy to track. I had the oil changed by my local dealer at 50,044mi as I wanted a record on file for my own piece of mind. They used the 0W-40 M1 supercar oil per the invoice. I did grab a sample of the existing oil with 1,077mi on it to send off for testing before bringing my vehicle to the local dealer.

That same evening when I got home from the office, I changed the oil (did not change the filter) to 5W-30 (yes, I know I'm crazy). I discovered the metal debris when draining the 0W-40 oil with 8 miles on it into a clean recycle container. I will hang onto this slightly used oil now after discovering the debris.

I have put a little over 500 miles on the 5W-30 oil this week (mostly interstate driving) and will change again this weekend. I will also change the filter and open up the one on there to inspect. I do plan to swap in a magnetic drain plug and will likely use the FilterMag filter magnet I have as well.

I am interested to see the oil analysis results from Speed Diagnostix. Hopefully the particle count won't be too alarming.

Seeing the metal debris definitely put a pit in my stomach. The vehicle was sold as certified pre-owned. So, in addition to the 150k mile special engine coverage, it has a 100k mile powertrain and 12mo/12k mile bumper-to-bumper warranty.

Check the filter innards too. And don’t change oil.. even ten miles without a new filter.

I do use 5w30 or 0w30. I think it depends on what is your oil pressure is at idle…

As far as dealer oil changes go… i did do my dads maverick.. pulled the big pan off the bottom.. looking for a 13mm for drain.. guess what. Not even tight. No wrench needed… my dad is pretty sure it was not changed..

Last thing listen hard.. check your mileage. Mileage may show a drop.. when a cyl is not getting a valve opened up enough. Not good. That is why i buy new.

Wanted to provide an update. I changed the oil again (567 miles on it) and inspected the drain pan. Still seeing some flakes, but much less than the previous time.

I added a magnetic drain plug as well. Found one the same size as OE with a rubber washer.

I also opened up the filter installed by the dealer and didn’t really see much.

Saw some small pieces of debris. Here’s a section of the filter media followed by 2x & 5x zoom of the same area.

At this point seems like I need to monitor things and hope & pray one of the three factory warranties will provide piece of mind.

That is what my drain looks like at 4k miles… not much on it. More than my old ecoboosts.. though.

Whatever is in the bottom of the crankcase oil… it is coming off the crank or a lifter. Not good. It gets in the bottom of the pan and stays till you drain it. It is not getting in the filter..

50k miles… i would get rid of it. The seller always has more knowlege than the buyer…

It is a big motor.. sooner or later you will hear whatever is shedding bearing material.

Bummer.

I would get rid of it. If i had too keep it.. i would take off each plug when the engine is hot and listen. Hard. You have a good warranty till 60k. I think that pico deal is crank… not lifters.

What i would do if i were to keep.. get a gm warranty to 100k.

More money.. yes. You will need it.

I have a 24 yukon and 25 slt. I have 72month and 72k miles on each. You have to. These motors fail hard early on…

This. Cut that filter open and see if the glitter party is there or not too.

ETA: saw the post right below this one. Looks like you opened it to and didn’t find the smoking gun which is a good sign.

wow! lots of good advice here! Here's what I've learned....the hard way.
Pennzoil Ultra EXTENDED oil ( 20K miles!!) made from clean natural gas to almost meet Class 4 Syntec!! It only means that the Additives that clean the engine and fight fuel contamination ( all engines have some!) actually do NOT breakdown till about 15-17k miles. Same for Mobil 1 Extended Performance . Normal Syntec of BOTH brands breakdown around 5-7K miles. All tests show it.

So since these premium forulas cost within 10% of of the normal formulas, buy it! If ya stretch your oil changes to 10-12K miles.......

Otherwise reg Syntec is great for you 5-6k mile oil change guys.

Love the magnetic oil plug!!

best.

Something is coming apart. To get that much glitter at ~500mi is a major issue in the making. I would either get rid of it, or only drive it where you know you have cell coverage and can get a tow. I certainly wouldn't take it on a road trip. Changing the oil more often, viscosity changes, brand changes etc. aren't going to do anything for you at this point. It's a ticking time bomb.

After draining the oil, before replacing the drain plug, you may want to snake a lit flexyscope (don't know what it's actually called) into the oilpan,
so you can try to see if there's any material of concern collecting on the bottom.
