Has anyone started an mpg thread? If not, how about here? Before buying the vehicle, I found it difficult to find real world figures on it.

Let's list mpg, year, make and model (tahoe/yukon/escalade), 2wd vs 4wd, %city/%hwy driving, miles on odometer and miles since it was purchased (if applicable), state (because CA gas sucks), and fuel type (regular, premium, E85).

I'll start although I've only had mine for just over a week.

2008 Chevy Tahoe Hybrid 2wd
First couple of days - 90% hwy/10% city - 23.9 mpg
Next couple of days - 80% city/20% hwy - 17.2 mpg

Running on CA's crappy gas - regular unleaded.

just over 34k on the clock when bought. figures above are based on only about 700 miles of driving.

I'll be going on a long road trip this weekend so I'll see how it does with extensive highway cruising.

-----------------

ADD'L INFO:

Consumer Reports just released their report on most fuel efficient vehicles based on their real-world tests. The Tahoe Hybrid made the list in their Mid/Full size SUV category.

CR states:
"These lists show the vehicles within each category that achieved the best or worst gas mileage in our real-world tests. We have selected mpg cutoffs that are relative to each category. For example, a vehicle that gets 19 mpg would not be a standout among wagons, but it would be among the highest in the midsized SUV or minivan categories."

I've attached a screenshot of the table. Numbers are Overall MPG (19), City MPG (14), and Highway MPG (25). I'm sort of surprised by the 14 MPG City result.

17 hwy and 13 city. I'm hoping after getting a tune in the Fall that both of those number will go up by 3 mpg each which I'll consider very good.

Back in 2003 I bought a brand new little s-10 Blazer Xtreme and it only got 17 (hwy or city) so I'll take what I'm getting with a LOT more room

2007 GMC Yukon 5.3l 2wd.
90% highway
10% city
17.8 MPG
On 91 octane in CA

I suspect the hybrids do better on the hwy b/c they can stay in 4 cylinder mode longer since they have 3 liters to work with rather than 2.65. I don't think it is the hybrid component b/c from what I've read, it doesn't come into play much during hwy cruising.

I was really hoping for 19 mpg in the city but so far I'm satisfied. Looks like this monstrosity should at least equal our FJ Cruiser (4L V6) which gets 15-17 mpg combined city and hwy.

Mmm..data. Love some good stats.

I've got a 2009 Hybrid Tahoe...all stock...with bald original tires!
About 36,000 on the odometer.
Using regular gas in Michigan.

At 55 mph (cruise control) on a flat road, I get 29 instant mpg.
At 60 mph (cruise control) on a flat road, I get 26 instant mpg.

I drive about 70 miles daily through 3 slow (35mph) villages and the rest is 55 mph..I average 23.8 mpg driving only that route.

Took a 500 mi interstate highway road trip and averaged 21.4 mpg in 2wd.
Same 500 mi interstate highway road trip in "Auto Wheel Drive" and got 19.9 mpg.

I also realized that remote start kills fuel range! When I go a while without using remote start, the fuel range is right around 500 miles...when I use remote start a few times a week, it'll drop as low as 425 miles!

I did some playing around and found that at 70mph, mpg is about 17-18mpg on a flat road and the hybrid menu says there is no hybrid input..but speed up to 76mph and itll drop to 4-cyl + hybrid and get back into the 24mpg range...I think its geared for "real" highway speeds instead of posted highway speeds.

That's interesting. Is it still cold in your neck of the woods? I remember reading that hybrid batteries do not like the cold.

Do you have a 4wd hybrid?

Also, for me I see 23+ mpg regardless of whether I'm going 65 or 75 mph so far. This weekend's trip will have a lot of flat hwy driving so I'll have more data after that.

In my city, there are lots of 50-60 mph roads. I think my city mpg would do better if I didn't have to keep accelerating up to the higher speeds only to find myself at a red light soon thereafter.

Its starting to warm up now (70's)..was chilly when I first started driving it (30's in the AM and 50's in the afternoons). Wish I took more real numbers back then to compare to.
I was thinking more about how the air density would hurt the MPG. Since cold air is more dense, the gas engine runs stronger, but with such a big surface area, makes it more work to drive down the road, aerodynamically.
Interesting point about the batteries though, didnt even think about that! I'm sure there was some battery power loss.

Yup, 4WD...but I usually drive it in 2WD mode..I noticed that even the "Auto" mode robs a few mpg.

If it would stay in 4 cylinder mode longer it MIGHT but it hops around so much that really 4 cylinder mode is useless IMO. Another reason why I'm really looking forward to getting a tune so that I can get rid of the fuel management junk!

I definitely have to make a mental note to keep my right foot still to maintain 4 cylinder mode but once I do the tahoe will stay in V4 mode for miles at a time...until the next slight incline.

Maybe that's my problem cuz I use cruise a lot in order to keep myself from speeding. If I don't use cruise I get tickets left and right cuz I just go and don't pay attention :)

Partial update.

Went about 400 miles yesterday. The tahoe didn't do as well as I had hoped for.

About 19.8 mpg (vehicle reading) at about 75 mph on mostly cruise control.

I was hoping to break 20 but it still did better than my FJ Cruiser would have and did about as well as my 1st gen Nissan Murano AWD.

Still impressive for a nearly 3 ton truck with a 6L V8. :)

Curious...were you in 2wd or auto mode?
