Got another couple hours in tonight and its officially 2 bolts from being pulled. Last time I pulled the entire core support since I did major cooling system upgrades but this time I'm gonna try without even pulling the grill.
Got down to 2 bolts and quit until I get a helper because that's a lot if weight to be suspending in mid air by yourself. Did I mention I hate long tube headers sometimes.

So I turned my attention to Green Bean my 02 Honda rancher 350 rust bucket special. Bought 2 old airforce beach patrol quads with rotten frames and 1 used frame to make 1 good quad. Built it about 2 years ago and have less than $500 in the whole thing. Been riding a lot recently and I noticed it smoking due to the valve cover dripping into the sparkplug hole. Also needing attention was dry fuel lines and some trail damage on the plastics to repair. I really do love this thing Honda air cooled 4 wheelers are about as reliable as can be.

It was hot today but got the motor out and pulled apart the top end. Everything looked good except one of the head alignment dowels looked like it was mushed. As well as one pushrod that had some strange wear on its side. Spun the crank and the cam looks good on all lobes! Probably pull the bottom apart tomorrow.

So what do you think caused that?

Probably from when I replaced the head gaskets in the truck. I must not have gotten it in the hole all the way or a piece of debris was under it. No sign not head gasket failure so I don't think it caused any problems.

The pushrod wear is very minimal. Really it's just some of the finish rubbed off.ay have been from me when I stalling it.

I'm stoked the cam looks good! I don't think I'll reuse the pistons no matter what but they look good as well. Really hoping the block checks out good. Would love to just throw a forged rotating assembly in it.

I was also able to see the timing chain and it looked good. So either a main bearing spun or the motor was fine and I should have done more diagnostic work before I pulled it.

Engine shop owner found the oil consumption culprit in less than 5 minutes before we even unloaded everything. Turns out the other machine shop that went out of business speced and ordered me the wrong size oil scrapper ring. I installed them not knowing and even struggled to install them because they were so thin and wanted to bend and warp.

New motor rebuild plan is:
-Stock crank (if checks good)
-Gen 4 rods (if checks good)
-Forged JE piston
-9.6-1 comp
-LS7 Lifters (if checks good)
-LS9 gaskets
-ARP everything (if checks good)
-Melling High volume pump
-Same TSP cam 224/228 113lsa
-Same Pushrods
