Cam swap people, what cam did you go with and how do you like it?

What cam did you go with? I’ve got a 2010 ssv with 5.3 and vvt. I’m keeping the vvt but looking for real world drivability on the camshaft you went with.

Thanks for any insight.

Performance while deleting afm. I don’t tow with it, would just like it to move out of its own way. This is actually my wife’s vehicle and use it for a family vehicle as well.
I’m curious on drivability stories with any aftermarket cams people have put in their tahoes.

I’m not new to cam swaps in Ls vehicles but new to vvt and how it affects any shakiness or feel at idle.

Probably should have posted this in your performance section. You will get some responses though. Good luck.

Figured engine and drivetrain was the right section since it gets more action but if an admin wants to move it, that’s fine too.

I guess not many put aftermarket cams in their suv’s

There are quite a few guys on here who have put in larger camshafts, you have to search and ask as they mostly posted during an AFM delete.

https://ls1tech.com/forums/dynamome...otion-5-3-drop-cam-results-41rwhp-22rwtq.html

My truck has a single pattern camshaft as it does not have VVT and my plan was to use the Crane 1449501 https://markenperformance.com/n-867...-for-ls-stock-oe-valve-trains-4-8l-to-6l.html but it does not seem to have been very popular. Probably because folks are always looking for big numbers. If I cannot get my hands on one when the time comes, I'll either have one custom made by them to those specs or go for the other, the 1449541 which is also the Vinci Trucker or RV camshaft.

I would like to hear from those guys who put those "big" cams in their otherwise stock trucks, one guy on youtube did and his gets terrible mileage for what it is. Let me see... here:

Texas Speed has some good VVT cam options.

I have a ‘05 Tahoe with some performance mods. I originally went with a BTR stage 2 truck cam, but it felt like I lost a decent amount of torque down low. Mid to top rpm range, I could definitely feel a difference, and it pulled harder at that rpm. A tuner can only help you so much given the cam choice. I feel the BTR stage 2 truck cam is geared more toward trucks and not necessarily SUVs (heavier).

I switched to a Vinci MT-554 cam per Vinci’s recommendation with my mods and elevation. The Hoe now pulls hard down low to get moving and still has a good amount of power through mid and top range rpm. I advise reaching out to them for a recommendation based on what you’re looking for.

That’s because most people care about the all out power number rather than what the curve looks like and how it drives off the 1/4 mile. That’s why if/when I cam either of my trucks I will be keeping the VVT because that helps a lot with power down low.

I actually have a tsp stage 2 vvt 5.3 truck cam sitting on the shelf for it but after my wife drove my car (and decided it shook too much but was “f-ing fast” I’ve been shopping around for maybe something smaller but not much out there that retains vvt.

I have the BTR Stage III truck cam (first version) in my Avalanche and it's a blast to drive, especially with a proper torque converter upgrade.

Not looking for an all out hp build. Have thought about snagging a zl1 converter for it just to make sure it’s smooth and doesn’t push at all (though my cam is bigger and doesn’t push too bad).

This is one of the most popular grinds and has VVT. A few companies will do a custom VVT grind for you for about $50 more.

I posted I have it. Still haven’t found much info on how it actually drives/acts.

I found some videos on YouTube and it doesn't sound super lopey. Me personally, I wouldn't want anything that wouldn't work with the stock torque converter. I did a mind cam in a Trailblazer SS a few years ago and did a Yank converter that everyone on the forum said was a "must have" and I absolutely hated it. If you're trying to put something together that is a daily, don't build something that belongs only on the track.

A bunch of guys over at performancetrucks. net have kept VVT on their silvarados etc. More information there for sure.
Found a few threads on the cam I have. Unfortunately most just speak of power and not daily driving it. Maybe I’ll sign up.

Here is what I put in my 07. I wanted to remove the AFM system. Comp Cam 54-412-11 212/218 114LSA, CHE Trunions, LS6 springs, 7.40 Chromoly Pushrods, Delphi LS7 lifters, high volume oil pump, new water pump, new timing chain, ARP bolts. I rebuilt the tranny but kept the factory stall. It runs great.
