Anyone that's had a bad lifter, I'm sure knows what they sound like. attached is a video from a 2015 5.3 liter yukon we just purchased. pretty sure we got took, and it's got at minimum a bad lifter. When you start the car up the tick is infrequent, just a tick here or there, but after you let it idle for a minute or two it really gets into rhythm and the steady tick you hear in the video is there. Just looking for confirmation from you guys that it's what I think it is. thanks in advance.

Yes, that's what would be my assumption. Or, you have 1 bent pushrod. I wouldn't drive it and either have it looked at, or pull the valve cover yourself and see if you got anything loose. If it's a bent rod, you may get lucky with a new one and an oil change. But, more than likely it'll need lifters.

We are going to get it to the shop and get it fixed, hopefully it's just a bad lifter and hasn't caused additional damage. I've never owned a gm product, so I'm doing a lot of research. would you guys be scared to do a delete tune to the AFM? looks like that's the leading cause of lifter failures. any advice or associated threads are appreciated

If a bad lifter and has damaged the cam then a full delete is a good option. Replace all the lifters. Not all lifter failures are a afm lifter, a number are the other lifters having a roller going bad, like the #3 on mine.

If a bad lifter has damaged the cam, it should be obvious that the cam ALSO needs replacing.
Think of it as an opportunity to upgrade the cam.

I'm late to the party, but does that tick go away when you get above idle? I had a 2013 Silverado that made tons of valve train noise. So much so that I did a full AFM delete. To my surprise, nothing was failing.

I've turned off AFM on my 2017 since I bought it with 41k, now at 175k. Totally worth it. You can use a RANGE device, or just pay a shop that has HP Tuners and let them turn if off. You'll find it's happier being the V8 it was meant to be.....

Thanks for all the replies guys, we got it to the shop yesterday and the only thing they could hear today was the injectors which I guess are notoriously loud, they couldn't replicate the ticking like in the video. they're going to keep it a couple more days and see if they can hear any indication of lifter trouble before blindly tearing into it. definitely plan to do the AFM delete tune as well at this point. Will keep everyone updated. yukon has 157,000 miles on it fyi.
