2003 Inherited Green Suburban

I've been over at some of the 'suburban' sites and didn't get a good vibe. So, I'm here to see if the Tahoe/Yukon folks would be willing to help me sort things out.

My dad died.
I now have his 2003 Green Suburban.

My current problems:
1. Rear power windows on both sides do not go down or up- local switch or driver switch makes no difference. Am going to try bypassing with portable battery tomorrow.

2. A/C controls in the overhead area kept falling out so my dad disconnected the controls and they are sitting in a basket in the backseat. I need a way to keep them from 'walking' out of the plastic housing in the ceiling. Dad's solution of black mastic just made a huge mess and when it heats up in the summer the controls just vibrate back out of the housing.

3. Packrats completely filled the blower motor for the A/C with acorns. Gross! I finally got blower motor out and all acorns removed, but there is a 'thrum' sound when I have the blower on setting 3-4-or 5. At least it is cooling and blowing air now.

4. My dad backed into a tree and crushed a 1 foot by 10 inch area just outside the rear passenger side backup light. I look like I'm an idiot driver and folks comment on my 'beauty mark'.

5. Both front seats have cushion showing through the busted leather. Dad's solution was duct tape -- in silver so it would sort of match the gray leather. (head smack- what was he thinking?)

What I've fixed:
1. A/C blows cold air!!! Added R134 and cleaned the acorns out of the blower motor.

2. Rats had chewed some wiring on fuel injector. I went dumpster diving at the local repair shop and clipped a couple of replacement injectors from an old harness. Spliced in a new injector. Works fine and I have a backup if needed.

3. Rats also chewed the ground wire from the rear of the motor up to the body ground location. I added a new ground wire from the engine block (rear) up to the front of the cowling. Couldn't get my hands into where the old wire was grounding on the body.

4. Had a mechanic drain the gas tank and replace the sending unit in the gas tank as well as the fuel filter. The tank was completely full of gas. Saved the gas and it started up.

5. Spent 21 days chasing wiring gremlin that was causing anti-theft device to prevent start-up. On day 22 my anti-theft by-pass module, wire replacement, and ground wire cleanup allowed me to start the beast with the key again.

First off, my condolences for your loss

Secondly, we're a much more welcoming (By the way, welcome from Louisiana!), accommodating and helping forum. I'm sure you'll soon catch that vibe and feel at home. For the typical noob questions, we're not gonna chastise you and we really can't dismiss you with the classic "this has been discussed a billion times- search is your friend" response because the search function of the site is ailing. Also, we're just not like that unless we can tell that you're just being a lazy goober. So, feel free to ask anything, basic or advanced. I hope we can all help to make this beast a worthy keepsake for you.


Getting down to business:

1. Rear power windows on both sides do not go down or up- local switch or driver switch makes no difference. Am going to try bypassing with portable battery tomorrow.

Check fuses and really work the switches. It could be the common GM switch failure on switches that aren't used much. They'll develop a thin layer of corrosion on the contacts that'll keep the circuit from closing when you operate the switch. Often, some rigorous operating of the switch in both directions restores them. If so, then you know they're good. Taking them apart and cleaning the contacts with a pencil eraser is a quick and easy fix.

I'm not the most familiar with this particularly on the GMT800s. My guess is the plastic clips that held it in got brittle from the Texas heat. I don't know how it attaches or I'd offer solutions other than to replace the control unit.

Probably fine vibrations. Any chance you may have bent the blower wheel? Did you clean it thoroughly and evenly?

It's too bad for a paintless dent repair shop to fix or minimize? You might have to hand this one off to the professionals at a body shop if you're not skilled in body work (or patient enough!).

You can get replacement covers and foams and DIY it. Depending on how much you're willing to invest, the cover materials are available in vinyl and leather.

Good job with the repairs you've made so far! Electrical gremlins SUCK.

Welcome, you found the right place and your best source of parts will probably be the wrecking yard for the overhead ac controls I would just replace it if the knobs are cracked or something, seat covers might be a good temporary fix to at least make it look/feel better until you can find a better solution

I just used some on my central air the filter hook would not stay i fixed it with gorilla superglue..
it seems to handle the air unit vibration just fine...

Welcome to the forum from Oregon. Maybe one of the mods can repost some of the questions in different sections for more responses on all the questions.

I attempted a couple other forums when I first got my Tahoe but was not as informative as this place and this place even puts up with old guys like me.

Very sorry to hear of your loss and look forward to updates on the further progress of the Legacy Suburban you now have.


We recommend that you put all your rig(s) info in your signature so we all don’t have to guess at year, make, model, engine size, trans, rear axle locker…….etc. While you may have posted pertinent info in your first post, you may forget to do it again and the info is needed by us anyway. Makes it way easier on all members that attempt to help, to have that info right up front. It is also recommended that you take a pic of your RPO codes, on the inside cover of the glove box, and post that image in your signature. All this info will greatly help those that will try to help with a problem.


If there is any other info, like upgrades, mods or recent mechanical/maintenance work done, that would be helpful in any post as well. Too many times a question is asked by the poster and after about 10 responses we find out that the poster has done recent work to attempt to fix the problem or work that was done that SEEMS not related to the problem.

I also have a Suburban, but it is a 2005. That said, I actually have been doing research in one of the areas you question!

This is your best bet, if you have something you can use. Then you can work your way back from there.

The cheapest repair you can make is some silicon sealer. It won't rattle out. However, if you want to fix it "right", either go to the local wrecking yard or order the part off eBay. THIS is the topic I have been researching. I also have an '04 Silverado, and it has a busted map light switch. So I have been looking... Now, I don't know what trim level you have, but buying a new-to-you console could get you the garage door opener controls in addition to HVAC controls. Keep in mind that if you have patience or interest, you can watch Facebook Marketplace, Craigslist, OfferUp, and similar sites for part-outs of 99-2007.5 Avalanches, Escalades (all flavors!), Tahoes, Suburbans, Yukons, and Yukon XLs. I have source an overhead console like you described for $30, and one with HVAC, Sunroof, Garage Door Openers, and Map lights for $50. YMMV.

I don't know what your budget is like, but you also might consider the same route as above and replace it. Alternately, buy a new one. Just a thought.

I know EXACTLY what you mean; my wife did the same, and then pitches a fit every time I want to go to a body shop and have it fixed. :-( So I am interested in your solution.

Seat leather and cushions are available from a variety of sources. Also, if sourced locally, you might find a shop that would reupholster for a reasonable fee.

Do you really get that much flack for being a female wanting to do her own car maintenance? In one of my FB Groups we had a female completely rebuild her vehicle after insurance totalled it (for cost -- no frame damage!). The funny thing is that everyone just assumed she was a guy and treated her as such.

I'm in DFW. If you are in the area, I also know a really good, HONEST mechanic. If you're in Houston, you have my condolences. I jest!

I tell my kids all the time, "How do you learn anything if you don't ask?" Everyone has to be new once. Anyone that has a problem with that IS the problem.

First, I am very sorry for the loss of your Dad. I've been through that myself, and it hurts like Hell, but we do move forward in life, after a while. Hang in there.

GM Upfitters site has manuals. I had pulled the 2003 Elecrical info and there is a great Grounding Schematic (picture below). As you will see on the site, bad grounds cause all kinds of gremlins.

Did you check the child safety switch on the driver side door in the group where the other switches are located. I believe that will lock out the windows not working.

Sorry for your loss and welcome to the site. Sounds like you've done a pretty good job already for a newbie. I've been on this site for awhile, but don't post much, because I don't know much. I have found this site and the people on it to be extremely helpful. I'm not that mechanically inclined, so I sort through the info and only tackle the easy items myself. However, even when I hire out the more challenging work, it's good to have some knowledge on your side.

I have a 2003 Yukon XL and have experienced some of the same things you have. Here are a few of my experiences:

After a recent camping trip, I heard a thumping noise coming from the A/C blower motor. It was still working and I needed the A/C, so it was a few days before I had a chance to look at it. When I opened it up, I found a dead mouse that had its teeth sunk into one of the fan blades and was plastered to the side of the fan. What a ride!! After removal, my fan is still a little louder than it used to be, so I'll open it back up for a better cleaning as was suggested here.

When I purchased the truck, the drivers side seat was worn with the cushion showing too. I bought a replacement bottom cover and cushion only and replaced them. The online company I purchased it from had really good youtube videos to show how to do it. It looks like new, but it was leather and fairly expensive. I replaced the seat heater element at the time too, since it wasn't working and I read that was common. That didn't fix it though, so I have a little more work to do there.

Electrical gremlins are common and so frustrating! I ended up buying a jump pack and installing a second battery because I couldn't find the parasitic draw on my rig. Obviously, that didn't solve the problem, but kept me from getting stranded. I didn't have 21 days to look for the problem, so I finally took it to someone that knows the electrical systems on these vehicles very well and told them I would pay them to just go through it, removing anything that didn't belong and fixing all the grounds. They gave me back a large cardboard box full of wires and devices and I haven't had a problem since. It had an aftermarket remote start on it that I didn't even know about. Those are notorius for problems.

Feels like I have found a new home....

I have done the following:

1. Rear Windows Wont Lower
Checked to make sure the child safety lockout was off. No difference.
Pulled the driver-side controls, removed the bezel, pried open the housing, pulled it apart and put electric cleaner on the contacts. Put it all back together. No difference.
Plan to go to the junk yard to see if there is one there. Will take my battery, jump it and see if it works prior to buying it. I'm also leaning with the 'bad' switch or 'bad' ground as the culprit.

2. Overhead AC Controls in Backseat area
Tried the double-stick tape, heavy duty version. Did not work for long. Heat did it in.
Will check for another unit at the junk yard, paying attention to the 'broken clip' possibility.

3. Blower Motor
Run the motor only on 1-2-or 3 until I can set up a box fan to blow on me while I pull it again to re-clean it. Could be I should have put some lithium on it or lubricate it and make sure its squeaky clean. Weather is supposed to be better for the next 10 days.

4. Dent in rear quarter panel
No decent repair places near where I live... at least not that I've heard. So I'm thinking to clean it up, prep the metal with some primer and let it go for now. If I get some time, I'll just paint a big band-aid on it and enjoy the looks from folks.

5. Front cushions
I'm adding a towel to cover the front seat bottom until this winter. If I'm going to replace the cushion/cover, then I'll research adding in a front seat heater as well.


Do I really get static for being female?
Yes. Some of the forums out there are not so tolerant.

What type of dog is it?
Nearly 18 year old Australian shepherd, border collie mix. Blind (cataracts) and deaf (old age). Unless its time to eat, she mainly just sleeps the day away. Hates to have her nails trimmed, but loves to have her ears cleaned.

I'll post some pictures of things and do a more thorough job of putting the specifics of my vehicle in my signature.
