On the cold mornings we are now getting here in Cincy when I start my truck (199K miles) I get the valve/lifter rattle for a minute or so then it is quiet and normal sounding. I am running 10w 30 in it. Should I run a thinner oil to help get oil to those lifters sooner in cold weather? The truck runs and sounds great otherwise.

I would be using 5w30 [which is what is called for in your 2001] if this was my 5.3 Silverado.

With that said I get the same lifter/valve rattle in my 2016 5.3 Tahoe in cold climates for a minute or so [sometimes till it is warmed up if really cold out] then goes away. I use 0w20 but that is what the 2015+ vehicles call for.
