A stock 80 will lol at your stock 6.0.

Nm, you drive like my Grandma.. that 60 will be fine.

:yaoface2:

You would shudder to know the things I do with your grandma :)

But yeah Im a conservative driver in the Tahoe I rely on it for work. I smash on the D100 but the TorqueFlight 3 speed in it is a hoss.

From what I remember the 4L65 was built pretty much to the limit that the LQ9 outputs, 380lb/ft if I remember correctly for the trans spec, 4L60 is 360lb/ft I think. Lots of Escalades and Tahoes have problems with their transmissions it seems, mine included an a couple of other people I personally know that had their 4L60s rebuilt.

I bought my 05 with 83K miles on it and it already had a replacement trans in it that I feel is going again with only 92K miles on it. Probably less than 20K miles total on the rebuild.

If I can find a 4L65 core I'm contemplating trying a rebuild myself to see if I can do it. Been reading a bit on the web about rebuilding these transmissions 60/65 series and I see a lot of references to rebuilding the valve body to avoid burning up the newly rebuilt transmission. Supposedly one of the bores wears and doesn't hold pressure, leading to heat build up I believe it was in the torque converter (TCC apply maybe?) anyway, there are rebuild kits available to ream out the bore and replacement parts to make the VB like new.

Since mine is a rebuilt Jasper transmission I wonder how old the VB is in that vehicle, and sometimes wonder if it was a rebuilt 4L60 instead of a 65. It isn't quite right and I had a shudder under light throttle in 4th with the converter locked. No codes related to it but seems to be consistent with what I've read about the VB wear.

I've also contemplated buying a new VB (about $50 used on eBay) and trying to rebuild that myself and replacing the one in the rebuilt trans to see if it improves things. Not much to lose at this point and a learning experience (good or bad) IMO. Luckily it's not a daily driver so I can live with some downtime if I do need to rebuild the transmission at a later time.

I built my 4L60e with a monster in a box kit, and it has been flawless. I also tow a 9,500lb trailer.
if joe blow down the street builds it and says it has all the parts and it blows in 200 miles. then I guess his quality is trash. But I can take the same parts and spend the extra time needed to clearance all the clutch packs properly, my trans will out his 100x over. it comes down to who is building it and the parts used. The 4L60 will last just fine behind the LQ9

You mean a built 4L60 will last just fine, correct? I take it that your stock 4L60 didn't hold up behind your 5.3L as the reason you rebuilt it. My stock 4L65 didn't hold up behind my LQ9. I bought my truck used but I don't believe it has ever towed, the receiver doesn't appear to ever had a hitch slid into it.

Are you a professional or experienced builder? I mentioned in my post above that I'm going to take a crack at building one someday. I'd like to know your experience level and how difficult you felt the rebuild was in getting everything right.

it's behind my LQ4 with a few tasteful mods. My stock trans was just fine, but I planned on doing a lot more towing so I just built one on the side and swapped it out after I was done with it. I would say that I'm a fairly experienced builder, I have done a bunch of transmissions in my time. If you have never done one, I would recommend reading as much as you can and watch as many rebuild videos. there is a good series I would recommend on this web site.....http://www.transmissionbench.com/videos.html

I appreciate the responses guys (and the faith that the 65E is not just junk).
Trans and motor should arrive shortly after Xmas. Im going to stick with rebuilding the 65, I just cant justify selling it to spend more on the 80, then more building the 80. I dont hotrod the hoe, I rarely tow. Just gotta decide If I wanna Do a new sun shell, servo and shift kit, or the whole mater rebuild kit.

Both places have several different options available.

Check out Sonnax as well for the shift kit, sun shell, etc. I'm finishing up a 4l70e now and am impressed with their stuff. Their products seem to address the common issues with our trannys.

Also, the transmission bench website referenced earlier was invaluable to me. I actually called Jimmy to get some questions answered. Really knowledgeable/nice guy. He also carries a good rebuild kit.
