Would this be a dumb idea?

Since there's no way to access the parking brake adjuster wheel on my "05 Yukon, would it be a dumb idea to drill a small hole in the drum (tophat) so you could move the adjuster with a narrow screwdriver? You could plug the hole if water is an issue. Or am I just overthinking this? Obviously I don't have a resetting gauge. LOL!

IMO, if that was feasible, the engineers would have done that design. You small hole would be in the front of the rotor and of course to do the adjustment you would have to align the rotor. The other thing is, you would need a wide enough hole to see in there and adjust.

Not saying Don't do it but if you did there is also a chance that if enough heat gets in that rotor or a certain situation, that hole could enlarge and crack. The old adjust holes were thru a backing plate that does not get near the heat that the rotor does.

pretty sure theres a slot on the backing plate with a rubber plug in it, like a inch wide. thats to get to the star wheel to adjust the e brake. they sell a flat tool for the job. only issue is you really cant get to it on most set ups. at least i could not on my pick ups, the leaf springs were in the way.

You gotta have that really special adjustment tool that has 9 bends in it to get in there. I knew guys that would take a cheap flat blade screwdriver and heat/bend the way they needed and used that.

I swear there is no access through the backing plate. It's at the top on this one and the cable goes in there but no hole. I wish there was one.

I thought technology was supposed to advance! This is really a poor design. It not even an emergency brake. There is no manual or automatic adjustment to them, and they had to update the bottom clip in order to keep the shoe from flopping out and dragging inside the drum.
