2012 Tahoe: Cabin Air Filter??? Confusion....

Hi Guys,
Want to replace the cabin air filter 100+ miles..

I can SEE it with glove box door dropped..

BUT online I see references to "KIT to replace filter", "Replacement Filter door", "Filter to be used if the filter box 'Has Been Cut'""..

Please educate me about How To Replace the original 2012 Tahoe Cabin Air Filter.

I can cut anything, drill anything, but WHAT????

The kits are there for the numerous rigs that do not have the cabin air filter but the owner wants to install one depending on how far that owner needs to go to do that.

Watch 2-3 you tube videos for the procedure or wait for a member with a rig the same year to chime in.

You don’t have one unless a previous owner installed one . You’ll not be able to seee it with the glove box open. You need to pull the passenger kick panel under dash and cut a hole in the plastic condenser box and insert a filter then door Thats included in a retro kit.

Show a pic of what you’re looking at with the glove box door dropped. Pretty sure it’s not a filter.

There is a GM accessory to add a cabin filter (that Dorman copied) but unless someone has done that you do not have a cabin filter from the factory. If it has been done you have to remove the cover off the bottom of the heater case. I cannot be done through the glove box.

This is under your dash, NOTHING IN OR BEHIND GLOVEBOX... this is what you will find... there will be a door if the filter was put in or no door and you will have to cut it open.

All you are probably seeing is the insulation underdash/firewall

The screen is hung on two little slanted pegs.

@Galante: THANKS! I see where that cut would be made.. NOW I'm much less Confused about all this.

We live on a very rural road in Vermont USA but we have not been complaining about dust in the truck. IsThere any other consideration such as A/C evap heat exchanger that would benefit from adding a filter??

That’s not the cabin air filter, thats where it draws the interior air when you’re in recirculate mode, just like the screen it has on the exterior cowl area where it pulls the outside air from. It’s just a screen, and the air from both locations goes through the cabin air filter either before or after it gets heated/cooled and then goes through the ducting and out through the interior vents.

Just found this post and I am grateful to everyone. I have a 2011 Tahoe LT and I'm going to start this adventure this weekend, I understand that I have to drop that big black case that's pointing to the floor to get to the access door and if by some miracle there's a screw there that means somebody already did it. I don't have any smells or anything like that just thinking from the maintenance aspect. Now I'm finding out they didn't come that way from the dealer you had to have it done. So I'm wondering if it's actually necessary after all these years I'm not really worried about pollen or whatever and there are no weird smells coming out of the vent. But I am curious that I have discovered there is a maintenance you can do to spray a cleaner up the tube where the water drips from the evaporator has anyone tried that or is that also a waste of time I clearly have water or condensation on the ground when I run AC so it's not clogged. Thanks again for your time

when I got mine the mod was done but no filter was installed. I went ahead and put one in even thou it at over 130k on it when I got it. figured it can't hurt. it does flow a little bit less vent air. if you're in a super. hot climate, that might matter to you.


if the evap goes out on these, the dash has to be removed to change it. so stuck a filter in just in hopes it helps a bit.
