Hello All,

My name is Pete, I just purchased a Silver 2014 Tahoe SSV from Chicago motors on Friday. Flew into Chicago looked over vehicle all looked good and started the drive back to Vegas. Only a few things i noticed one the drive are oil pressure while driving is stable at 40 psi however when idling it drops down little over 20 psi, and there is small radiator fluid leak coming from somewhere accumulating on the passenger side lower plastic cover there are no obvious stains on block or water pump area. oil pressure is my main concern as i am used to my TBSS where pressure is constant 40 psi. Look forward to learning from you guys experiences with this vehicle, no major upgrades planned just going to use it a daily and tow rig. thanks for the add i will post up pics when i get a chance burnt out from the 2 day drive back to vegas.

Welcome from Virginia the heater hoses are over there so you might look for cracks and the area that’s wet may not be below the source but is the lowest point. If it spent its life in Chicago a good cleaning underneath and an undercoat to stop rust may be in order. Not sure if AFM is on your rig or it affects oil pressure mine doesn’t have it.

Welcome, oil pressure fluctuation is normal for these trucks, you could change out the oil pump with a melling and not have that issue, coolant leak I would use a flashlight and get under the truck and see if you can find where it is coming from, typical places are a crack in the plastic side of radiator, cracks in the hose by the "T" to the water pump, cracks in the reservoir tank or at the T's where the heater hoses enter the firewall and split off to the rear hvac.

Welcome!

Your oil pressure figures don't seem bad, but they might can be improved.
I'd remove the screen from under the oil pressure sensor and see if it's clogged. Clean or replace it. If due for an oil change, use 5 quarts of regular oil and 1 quart of ATF and a WIX filter since they're one of the cheaper but good filters. Run it until the oil is dark then switch to a high-quality full synthetic oil (Rotella for gas engines is great) and a new filter (another WIX, K&N or Mobil1 preferably) and stick with it to slowly clean your engine. Being in Las Vegas, you could run 10w-30 during the summer and 5W-30 during the winter if you wanted to. The AFM system is SENSITIVE to dirty oil and buildup. Slowly flushing the engine is a safe way to clean it and checking that screen under the pressure sensor will give you an idea of the oiling system's condition. If you're so inclined, you could pop off a valve cover to get a good idea of what the insides of the engine look like.

It's a lightweight and cheap way to help flush the engine. If there is any buildup, you don't want to use a harsh chemical flush as it can break up the gunk in larger chunks rather than dissolve it. The chunks can clog the tiny passages in the push rods, lifters and/or AFM solenoids/passages. Pretty much any high-quality synthetic oil contains detergents to clean and maintain cleanliness with consistent use. Some say that ATF doesn't contain stronger detergents and some say it does. All I know as it has been reported plenty of times that running it for a cycle has removed buildup and it was simply and safely drained out with the oil. I tried it when I first got mine 50K miles ago and drained considerably darker oil. I've used Mobil1 and Pennzoil Platinum exclusively during my ownership. At my last oil change at the beginning of this year, I tried another short (~1,000 mile) cycle with a quart of ATF and the oil was only slightly darker than when it went in. Most of that coloration could've been the darker color of the ATF tinting the nearly-clear new oil. I also pulled a valve cover and found the insides to be REALLY clean, especially for a nearly 200K-mile engine.

Welcome from NYC Pete!

Please post any other issues in the 2014 SSV section. Thank you. I generally hear good things about Chicago Motors.
