Since GM started not putting in drain plugs in 2003, you need to be more creative when changing the fluid. Here are your choices.

1. Remove the differential cover to drain.
2. Turn the truck upside down.
3. Drill a hole in the bottom of the differentials, drain, wrap it all up with duct tape and refill.

SW CT,
Good Old GM decided that a drain plug was not needed and wanted to see those who wanted to change the diff. fluid make a huge mess...the only way to be positive that all the old fluid is out is to remove the diff. cover.

Did mine at 50k and it was BLACK. Loosen all the bolts on the rear diff cover and give it a little tap. The fluid will drain out the bottom, there is no need to remove the cover entirely.

I may by an aftermarket diff cover with a drain plug.
