What did you do to your NNBS GMT900 Tahoe/Yukon Today?

Did you ever run E85 with those funky plugs?

Yes & No
No, the grubby plugs are pics of when I first purchased the vehicle and before I cleaned them and did all the other work I previously described(Dec 2018). They've been in the vehicle untouched ever since.

Yes, in 2020 I drove it for about 6 mths and 3000 miles on a 20-25% mix of E85 and regular 87 octane unleaded.

Since 2018, when those grubby plugs were cleaned, it has been driven on "all" grades of unleaded gasoline. Only once in the 3 yrs and 40k miles that I have owned it have I gotten a knock sensor DIC. That was on a long hwy trip while running 87 octane.

In 2021 it has only been feed premium unleaded.

pulling crossmember, front axle, Oil Pan, pickup tube, and windage tray.
Hoping i can clearly see damage and it's just bearings.

If all looks good, then the engine is getting pulled.


I'm pretty sure the issue was the highflow pump.

Installed my new spare tire winch and tool kit. Feels good to have a spare back on board.

Took the ramps out of the garage and placed them in front of the truck. Found the wheel chocks and placed them in front of the ramps. Noticed that the battery charger wasn't charging the other car, the breaker popped. Flipped that back on, went outside to drive the truck onto the ramps and BOOM, a huge thunderclap right overhead and out of the clear blue sky. Followed moments later by a fast moving storm. Guess no work on the cars today! Again! LOL

Yes, the idea was the pump sucked the pan dry and fkd.

And i got the pan off, and the windage tray off.

I don't think it was the pump.
I started going though my rods, and i can't see anything wrong.
so i started pulling bearing caps.

everything looks like it's still seating, looks great overall.


Then i shined my new handy light up at the main bearings.
Then i saw it, a little sliver of copper main on the thrust side of the middle bearing sticking out.
matches the color i saw in the filter perfectly




So....
Lets chat about main bearings.

Apparently the little tab for the thrust bearing to seat into the block is on the wrong side.
I think it was correct for the upper bearing (block side) so i didn't catch it for final assembly.

the main lower cap had the thrust bearing facing towards the front.
Its supposed to be to the rear.


I can't believe i fkn missed it.
I guess i just took it for granted that the tabs would match up when doing the final assembly...
I swear i triple checked that crap.

So i get to order a new set of mains.
Good news is, these race bearings seemed to have done no damage to the crank.
And i think me being OCD with oil filter changes probably saved my ass!!

I'll unbolt the flywheel from the converter, and remove the belts to get everything nice and sloppy.
Figuring i'll need to loosen the main cap bearings to have a chance of rolling in the new mains.

So how does one deal with the fkn indexing tab on mains being on the wrong side?

That happened here recently over on the Jersey shore. Bright sunny day, blue sky. A lightning bolt struck the beach and killed a lifeguard and injured a half dozen others. Right about the same time a young lifeguard got killed in a freak row boat training accident. Wave hit his boat from the side and he slammed his head on the side of the gunnel. Killed him. Mother nature is certainly pissed off.

I rolled out the block side bearing to see if I got that one backwards too.

Looked through my images, and sure enough.
There it is backwards.







So yeah i have to redo the converter back spacing when i'm done.



I don't understand how the fk i missed that, I knew the side with the indents needed to face to the rear.



I'm very glad i stopped driving it when i did.
But i do wish i tore into it before the last long drive, got iffy if the filter was actually bypassing or not.

Threw some new shoes on her too.
The mud terrains are actually quieter and smoother than the all terrains... Which tells me that the all-terrains likely had too many heat cycles and were a lot harder than when they were new.
Filled up the tank with corn as usual.
Still needs a bath severely.
And I actually have a long list of little things I have been procrastinating on and have had parts for sitting around.

Discovered the Secure Idle device wasn’t working on thecopcar. Today I had the chance to get under the dash. One solder joint had broken. I had a mini torch in the back, so in 5 seconds it was fixed.

Filled it with 89 octane at $3.35 gallon so I could run another log for BBP.
E85 is $2.75 a gallon now and cheaper to burn these days.
