I always though American manufacturers switched to metric ages ago.

Ha! I remember seeing that as early as 1986. It was true, except for the brakes. Those stayed SAE for a long time. Thecopcar (2011) was the first vehicle I owned where the brakes were metric to match the rest.

I used to live in Twin Peaks, but the rent out there is crazy. I am paying the same price now for a 2 story 2BR/2BA house with an attached garage the same that I used to pay for a 1BR apartment out there.

Yup... getting pricey over there. In Marin County, the average single home is around 2 million. IF you can find one !!

My guess would be that the imbalance might cause slow down/speed up at some crankshaft positions. It's been a while since physics classes, I have a feeling it might happen, but I can't explain the physics behind it.

This is what GM has to say on this topic:
DTC P0315
Circuit Description
The crankshaft position (CKP) system variation learn feature is used to calculate reference period errors caused by slight tolerance variations in the crankshaft, and the CKP sensor. The calculated error allows the powertrain control module (PCM) to accurately compensate for reference period variations. This enhances the ability of the PCM to detect misfire events over a wide range of engine speed and load. The PCM stores the Crankshaft Position System Variation values after a learn procedure has been performed. If the actual crankshaft position variation is not within the Crankshaft Position System Variation compensating values stored in the PCM, DTC P0300 may set. If the CKP system variation values are not stored in the PCM memory, DTC P0315 sets.

The CKP system variation learn procedure is also required when the following service procedures have been performed, regardless of whether or not DTC P0315 is set:

• An engine replacement

• A PCM replacement

• A harmonic balancer replacement

• A crankshaft replacement

• A CKP sensor replacement

• Any engine repairs which disturb the crankshaft to CKP sensor relationship.

He just started the information gathering phase. This could last weeks. There will then be a forum help phase where many members comment and provide moral support and encouragement. This will be followed by an attempted repair phase where he discovers he needs additional tools or more information so he will be back here repeatedly where we will provide more information and encouragement. Then after a few months he will take it to a no-good thieving shop (because that’s all there is around him) who will charge him an arm and a leg to replace the fuse but not before they short out another fuse or cause some other damage and the process will repeat. Did I forget anything Tony?
