In Russia, any tinting of the front side and windshield is prohibited. So when I got my Yukon from the USA with tinted front windows, the first thing I did was peel off all the tinting.

It's not illegal in the entire US, each state has it's own regulations. In Florida the front door windows can be tinted up to 28% visible light transmission and the windshield can be tinted above the AS-1 line (the very top of the windshield) with non-reflective tint only. Tinting below the AS-1 line is prohibited unless you get a medical exemption.

In Ohio, you can limo everything but driver, front pass and of course windshield. My 20 RST had all windows ceramic limo’d and windshield tinted as well. Never had any issues with seeing at night or caught any crap from popo. On my 21HC, I used clear ceramic on windshield, legal ceramic on front doors, and limo ceramic on everything else. My thought was, in the event of an accident, insurance companies could deny coverage saying my vision was impaired because of my tint.

Yep. I have been driving in northern michigan for almost 30 years now with tinted windows and have never once been pulled over for it. I think it really just depends mainly the location, and also what kind of mood the cop happens to be in that day haaa.

Going to schedule an appointment to put my (taken off my GX550) Vossen 22" wheels with 285/55 Wildpeaks on, tint, and ceramic coat.

Last time I got a ticket for window tint was 20 years ago, and back then you had to remove it, go to a Sherrif station for them to sign off on the correction made, then pay the ticket. Again, that was 20 years ago, so I have no idea if the price has gone up or if there are any other rules or stipulations that need to be met. I'll Chat GTP it before June, when I need to pay it.

Time to switch to the easily removable tint that is now available, or if the pocket book allows, the electronic tint that can be turned on and off lol

Funny you should mention that, because less than 24 hours later, I was thinking the same thing. The electronic tint comes standard on the sunroofs of the 2026 Nissan Leaf, but it's more of an opacity density than a dark tint. Either way, I'll look into my options.

I thought the law was changed 2 years ago to where officers couldn't just pull you over for minor infractions like that anymore, to reduce profiling and illegal stops, but I guess they can since it "qualifies" as a safety issue.

Varies based on local ordinances. Just like seat belts, holding your cell phone, etc.

FWIW it seems to be a primary offense in California, so one can be stopped solely for tint issues.

Fun Fact: Most states have tint exemption laws that require minimal work. In Texas, you simply need a doctors note (any type of doctor, dont even need to submit it anywhere, just keep it in your car).

I live in Florida, and a couple of years ago I was visiting my original home state of New Jersey on vacation. I was driving my personal vehicle which has Florida tags and also has front tinted windows. I was pulled over by the police and the reason was that front tinted windows are illegal in New Jersey. He knew good and well the vehicle was not registered in New Jersey since it has Florida tags. And then he said "since the vehicle is titled and registered in Florida and is driven by someone with a Florida driver's license I cannot ticket you." So, you might ask why did he even stop me? The only reason I can come up with is that he used the front tint as a reason to stop me to try to find something else he could cite me for ... expired license, expired registration, etc.

Yep…or dui…All they need is probable cause to pull you over.

According to my friend, it is easy to find something to pull someone over. Most people roll stop signs, use cell phones while driving, $500 ticket in Michigan, no turn signals or expired tabs. If you look, you can see what he means. Ever since Covid, people drive worse.
