Usually the spider gears will let go before the ring and pinion. You'll know if it's a spider because it will drive fine in certain positions. Once you start to turn a little and make the spiders start to rotate it will hit a dead spot and start skipping again.

@Fless said 2 quarts should have you covered. I can't remember exactly but that sounds right. Yes, $11 a quart is cheap. I believe I paid over $20 a quart at the dealer (before Amazon)

I did. No noise turning it by hand.

I’d rather have it be the transfer case than the diff. I hate setting up differentials. It’s time consuming and tedious. I’m always second guessing myself although I’ve only ever had one fail after gear swap and that was on drag car but in that instance the plug welds broke too and the center section turned straight up, ripped the driveshaft in 3 pieces shot out the back, broke the yoke off the diff and split transmission case right up the middle. All happened coming out of burnout box when I let off the line lock.
Transfer case is a fairly easy rebuild. Hardest part is taking it out but then again, you only have one driveshaft to contend with. Lol. Hope it’s an easy fix for ya either way. If this stuff was easy and cheap, everyone would be doing it.

If it's the rear, I'll just swap the complete rear. No rebuilds.

How old are your brake lines? You start pulling lines out from under clips, you may find stuff you don't like.

I'm glad you did. I wanted to pay my son to do it--he said he didn't want to spend all day doing it. Rusted brake lines would def take some time.

Yes, coil springs.

Did you try spinning just one tire with the other one stopped? To get the spider gears moving?

I’m thinking he was talking about the u-joint straps which should be replaced unless they go back on the same u-joint caps (in which case they need to be marked when removing so they go back on in the same exact orientation).

I haven't messed with it since Saturday--rained all day Sunday, and this new job gives me no time to do anything during the week unfortunately.
