I have noticed on here that some people have 5% tint all the way around on their trucks, and some people mention 50% tint on their windshields.

I have 5% on my back rollups and rear window, 24% on my front rollups, and factory on the windshield. The place that did my tint told me they will not do any darker per state law. Anybody know if there's a way around this? I want to tint my front rollups even darker and put a 50% on the windshield as well.

Anyone who has super dark tint- do the cops mess with you any more than usual? (I get pulled over for not having a front lic plate sometimes, and once to have the tint checked but he took my word for it anyway).

Any input would be great! Thanks :)

An optometrist or other physician has to sign and send in a form to the DPS saying you need darker tint in your car. If approved, you can place any tint on any portion of the car EXCEPT for the rest of the windshield. Windshield below the AS-1 line has to stay untouched

The cops don't effect my decisions haha, 1% windows all around, 3% front windows and a 20% brow on the winshield.
Had to pull the the front ones the other day for inspection, and reinstall afterwards. But my installer hooks me up with illegal tint on the low so I don't mind.
Now if I was in the Texas capital like you, I would do only 15% fronts.

Lastly they're is a slight new change in the law and if one has an 07 Up model car, bought after September 1, 2007 they do not need to have front plates.
My 07 was bought on September 8th. :D

I bought my 2009 Tahoe last Xmas...was issued a pair of plates. If the law was changed, why did I get 2 plates:) TX still is a 2 plate state. A lot of people misunderstood the bill (HB 1666) Fred Brown submitted back in Feb 2007...It was written so it would be effective 9/1/2007. Problem is HB 1666 is still a bill and hasn't passed:
http://www.legis.state.tx.us/BillLookup/history.aspx?LegSess=80R&Bill=HB1666

This guy that parks near me at work has a 2010 Camaro and ended up suction-cupping his front plate to his windshield because he's been lit up 3 times by City and county LEOs.

Oh I made a mistake on that one! :secret:
But I have gone 2.5 years without mine, been pulled over a couple of times, and no cop has ever said anything to me about front plates.

Thanks for the info guys...as far as the tint I may just leave the windshield and go darker on the rest. Not quite sure yet. Of course a friend of mine is a doctor and he would probably hook me up with a letter.

See I only received one license plate when I bought my Tahoe in '09... so when a cop asks about it I play dumb and act like I didn't know I needed to have another one b/c they only sent me one :D Sometimes it's good to be a chick...

RoHoe, Houston cops are bad...UGH! I was there for about 4 years, I think they're a little more lenient in Austin unless you're downtown drinking or something.

Modded- where in TX are you? Don't remember if I asked you that already.

I put twenty percent around the entire truck except the windshield...so it makes it about 15% on the front windows and about 5% on the all the rear. I also have a 5% "eyebrow" strip that goes about 2 inches below the AS-1 line.

I have never been questioned by police and the trick is to find the "right" shop or guy to do your inspection...also it helps to get an inspection done at a shop that has a line out of the door because they get in such a hurry to get as much business as possible that they will skip the tint check....best time to go is on the last Saturday of the month when everyone is trying to get the inspection done

My friend has limo tint over factory 20% but its only on the back windows. In pearland the cops generally wont mess with you for tint or no front plates. Unless you have some crazy dark tint.

No MissCB25 you never askked, but I live in Dallas.
On these trucks anything is legal on the back windows so there is no worry back there, all one has to worry about is the front 2 and the winshield.
I say get a 20% on top of the factory windows in the front, then keep the 5% on your rears and the cops will not notice it.
Right now you most likely have 30 or 35% ontop of you factory 70s in the front.

Windshield TINT

Buy a piece of the 70% to install on your windshield, it's a very very high end tint. I have 20% Wincos all around, plus that windshield piece WITH a black interior and my AC is on low 90% of the time..in TEXAS. You can't even tell it's on.

INSTALL
This is the difficult part. You have to buddy up with someone who does this for a living or knows who will install it for you. Part of the industry is to not go around telling everyone WHO did your illegal tint...it's kinda like ratting them out. So just keep your eyes open, or drive up to Dallas and I'll hook you up.

Hey Boss, how do you handle that winshield tint along with your registration/inspection stickers?
I may do that Crystalline thing.

I took mine off with some heat first. Then went out to a signs store and bought a sq ft of the clear electrostatic-cling film. Then I cut out a big square, placed my registration sticker in the middle and cut around it. Same with inspection.

I was pulled over a while back for expired registration and I suppose the the cop thought I was a drug dealer. He looked at both my inspection and registration, took numbers down from them and all. Never once did he notice the tint or the fact that they weren't glued on.

Prolly shouldnt be posting that too often...

You probably already know this, but the key to a good tint is both UV, visible light AND Infrared protection. The source of the heat is visible light and Infrared light. Wincos provides protection from both, but isn't as expensive as the 3M.

Wincos HCD-20
Visible Light Transmitted 23%
Visible Light Reflected 5%
IR Rejection 92%
UV Ray Rejection 99%+
Total Solar Energy Rejected %57

CM Crystalline
99.99% UV ultraviolet rejection
97% IR rejection

BOSS, great info- thank you. I have a friend who runs a body shop here in Austin, I'm going to see if he can help me out. I have 3M tint now and didn't pay too much to have it done, but may look into the Winco if it'll save me a good amt of money.

NP all tint companies make a variety of films, the key is high Infrared rejection.

I've had 5% all the way around on both my Tahoe and Caddi for about three yrs and have only been pulled over once by DPS and given a warning. APD and RRPD just cruise right by me, most of them glancing my way but not pulling me over. DPS is the worst when it comes to enforcing the law.
At least now it's 24%. Not too long ago the law used to be 35% along the sides.
I've been tinting almost as long as I've been doing a/v installation (17 yrs), so if you need anything, just lmk.

I just have my two front windows tinted at 20% to match all the factory rear tint. Never been pulled over for it and I've had it about 4 years now.

on my rear windows, i've got 5% over the factory 20, the 2 rear passenger doors 20% over the factory 20,and 20% on the front two. with the 5 on the rears, the 2 rear passenger doors that just have 20 on 20, you can't tell the difference between them and the back ones.

you won't see this in my pics, though, i just recently did this....everything is 20% in my pics
