Then go visit the USS Kidd! It's nice to be able to stand up in a yacht's engine room, the designer's priorities were in the right place!

I should. I went on a field trip in elementary school but that was so long ago I don't remember anything about it. They had some wooden ship there, too. It was like a wooden version of a modern battleship with cannons poking through the sides of the hull and decorative carved architecture everywhere on the inside. I should visit the Kidd, maybe even bring the girls.

You know you've gotten a good tour and look at a ship when you've been to shaft alley! I always strive to get down into the ****** of a ship, beneath the deck plates and bilges and into shaft alley!

The Kidd is still on my bucket list. A great uncle, long since passed, served on one of Kidd's sister ships during WW2, both ships fought alongside each other during the Pacific campaign. In your area, I've been to the USS Texas, USS Alabama and USS Drum. Saw the latter two when I was 11 and returned a few years ago with my girls who were then about my age when first touring them. Cherished memories.
