Whats up everyone

Im T.J., here from lake county Illinois. Found myself on these forums quite frequent since picking up my 14 SSV and recivilanizing it, so figured might as well join. Also a member on duramaxdiesels.com

Im 34, spent most my life as a mechanic, assembled engines at a local engine shop for some years and worked at a local hot rod shop so im no stranger to performance lol. I've retired from cars as a career to welder, since then im starting to enjoy tinkering again. Ive got a 11 sec duramax that takes most of my money. Hopefully this doesnt do the same lol.

Past 8 years ive owned an 06 ex border patrol hoe, and in September i snagged a clean ssv from a dealer here in town, truck came from colorado(by the rock chips and sand abrasion id imagine mountain ranger) i admit im thankful I found one so clean. It's got its blems but over time I'll address the little things i can improve. Its rust free, has 164k as of today. ive put a lot of time and effort into it already and with my ocd, im far from done lol

Day after i put a down payment on it I ordered all new mevotech ttx upper and lower control arms, leveling kit, inner & outer tie rods and blasted it apart within 24 hours of owning it. Since then its been normal matainence, tune up, motor mounts, trans mount, full fluids, loaded delco calipers, trans service etc. Did a exhaust resonator delete and airaid jr so it makes some sort of noise lol. Added fahren LEDs and Lasfit switchbacks. Afm/dod disabler went in too. I removed the light posts in the a pillars, plugged the holes there and in the roof and found a mint center console and interior a pillars to make it feel more civilian and added a remote start kit. Figured doing chip guard along the rockers and lower doors would be ideal after seeing how abraded they were. I cleaned it up, epoxy primed, seal based and cleared as well as did a full paint correction with coarse clay, rupes pads and compounds, sealed with colinite 476 and then adams patriot wax. I was shocked to see after pulling all the body plugs that the internal panels had zero rust but still received heavy cavity waxing with kbs cavity coat. I did a full woolwax undercoating and found this trick BT off road chassis flusher to use prior to the internal frame coating.

The only complaint I have is this. Since my old tahoe hasnt sold ive been using it as the winter beater, after snow last week I saw yesterday there's water on the passenger floor board close to the seat. The roof and a pillars I know for a fact are sealed. So im unsure if its a clogged drain in the cowl panel, or where to look. unfortunately I couldnt locate the trail, just the aftermath. The windshield seal looks as if its popped and come spring I for sure will be having it resealed, the culprit spot i hit with windshield sealant today. Im open to any feedback or suggestions, prefer to address it immediately even if it sits for winter

Future plans
Replace both bumper covers with fresh gm ones since theyre the only two rough spots
-color matched door handles and mirrors
-fix spotlight door notches and blend areas accordingly
-285s and bronze falcon offroad wheels
-Sonnax zip kit or transgo shift kit
-Billet triple disc conv from Chris at circle d(mild stall)
-afm/dod delete, possible bump stick, long tubes and ORY
-leather seat cover conversion up front
-at bare minimum I'll be doing a trans tune on hp tuners, or taking the hoe somewhere for a full street tune
-if one day I win the lotto id love to procharge it

Welcome to the Forum from NH.

Lots of knowledgeable folks here who freely share their knowledge, experiences, and perspectives. Knowledge is power.

I hope that you will become a participating member in the Forum's discussions.

Those leaks are really hard to trace, as times, and unfortunately, I do not have any new suggestions for you.

@Rocket Man is currently hunting down a leak on the drivers side, and he may be able to provide you with some troubleshooting suggestions.

ALL of 'em.
As requested. Even some of the old truck too, 371 (.040 lq4) 12.5:1, made 625 on motor. Was set up for a 400 shot

Forgot too on the ssv I ended up installing a dic as well, if it weren't for this forum I never would've known it's a bolt in swap. In the spam of photos you can see it in the interior picture as well as the console i snagged for $100 locally. INSANE how much theyre going for on ebay!

Also seen a thread where someone had a door leaking and dripping near the sill plate.

It was catching on the doorpanel holder tabs and dripping past some worn out foam squares to get past moisture barrier in door and dripping inside.

Welcome from someone who worked around that area back in the 80s -- McHenry, Lakemoor, Woodstock, Great Lakes Naval.
Thank you and talk about a small world! Actually worked out in lakemoor for a few years as a tech

As in the seam sealer cracked? If so ive had really good luck with the 3m seam sealer, and their urethane 1k as well in case you dont feel like spending the 150 for the 2 part gun. Ill have to check that area as well

Its funny you mention that, and of course more time helped me think. Mine was on the floor liner in front of the front right seat bolt. I did notice a wet spot on the door card, and after seeing your response I'll hopefully be able to dig a little tomorrow

What blows my mind is I've had the new tahoe in the rain numerous times and never saw a single drop. Few inches of snow on the roof and some thawing apparently changed that. Either way thanks for that spot reference too, much appreciated!

What kind of tech? My main office was in Morris, and I think it was 1/1/1985 that we acquired Lakes Cablevision in McHenry. That day we had 17" of snow and I had to go up there, driving on snowy and icy roads in a 2wd pickup.

Welcome from southern WI. I spent a lot of time in the Chicagoland area doing field service. Many places in Lake County.

I was a book hour tech at a local ma/pa mechanics shop called CIF enterprises. Probably from 2011-2012 if i had to guess? And that sounds like quite the adventure, and one that wont be forgotten lol

Also attached are more pictures

The one circled is where I found the water, seam sealer under the cowl panel doesn't show any evidence. However I did find a difference today. Cowl panel area looks in tact, but the wind insulator on the passanger side was rolled inside of the door jamb possibly putting pressure onto the door harness grommet when closed. Drivers was towards the outside so fingers crossed it's dry from here on out. Still boggled why all of the rain never affected it but the snow did

Forgot to add too, little shocked when I saw the engine hours after the dic swap, 7400 is a bit more than I was hoping for lol

Under view is the woolwax application and chip guard on the rockers, color variance is from touch up/using up the remaining wool wax

As far as any detailing/ocd friends on here I'll share my experience, or for anyone whos into trying new products

I initially went to school for collision repair, and it was my first job. The body shop i worked at used nothing but 3m products which years later I realized their compounds had fillers(looks great initially, after a few weeks things fade away) years later buddy i worked with at the engine shop turned me onto rupes compounds and pads. Long story short his black colorado i thought was repainted, never seen factory paint look THAT good. My diesels paint is from texas, other than the hood grille and bumper caps the paint is original, Rupes is what you see is what you get with zero fillers and seems to add depth clarity and more so of that "wetness" to it. My truck is far from perfect, but its paint has never looked better. I get compliments on it all the time. After buffing I top coat with adams patriot wax and use their cs3 detailed frequently. Always have a gallon on hand lol. Rupes Bigfoot is for rotary, da is strictly da. A buddy with a black tahoe used the wrong style and had much more correction to do afterwards. As far as the patriot wax its cut and dry. Cs3 follow their instructions of apply, wipe with one side of microfiber, buff with the dry side and repeat panel by panel. After that you can use it as any normal detail spray with zero streaks. My truck rarely sees rain, but the one picture you can tell how well it's hydrophobic properties work

Did you run the DuraMax at Great Lakes Dragaway in Kenosha, WI if still there? Dad used to take me there when I was a kid (Probably a subdivision now) but remember seeing the Back Up Pickup Truck drag rig (think it was a ‘67 Dodge pick up with the engine mounted in the bed with drive wheels in the front and drove backwards) The Little Red Wagon

Yessir thats my home track! Its still around and has changed a bit. They have the normal drag strip, area next to tech is a drift course and apparently they now do rc drag racing there as well. Ive never seen that truck run in person but I feel like I've seen it on the internet before. Definitely gotta make it out there at some point, its always a good time!
