Got it done, looks good as new, and I have a spare HVAC unit with extra buttons and lights for when my main had them go out.
For everyone doing this in the future, remove the 4 tiny bolts to the unit, then carefully pry both knobs off. This in turn allows the face plate to come off.
Getting the buttons out is a little tricky. It is actually a button on the inside with a black cover facing out, so you gently pry the button inward and the black cover slips off (outwards), and you're good to go. So, my black cover for the AC unit was bad, not the actual button.
